This mix is a hodgepodge of things I liked from this year and a few tracks that I have been obsessed with for some time now. Mostly it came out of an attempt not to overthink it, which is a bad habit of mine I'm trying to confront in various aspects of life. It is also I suppose an ode to an erstwhile friend who had a big impact on me, after all everything we do with art is intrinsically devotional. That said, the ideal with this mix was to be straightforward and above all lighthearted, since goddess knows I could be better at focusing on the things that balance out my own cast iron one. It is of course still indulgent as ever :) thanks for listening, stay warm, and don't forget to dance.

The recipe comes courtesy of my beloved mother, since the only kind of baking I really do involves weed.

Victoria Sponge Recipe

Ingredients:
1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
1 cup plus 2 Tbs sugar
1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract
4 large eggs
2 cups self raising flour
1 Tbs milk

Method:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
2. Cream the butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy
3. Add the eggs one at a time and mix thoroughly
4. Sift the flour into the bowl and GENTLY fold in the flour and milk
5. Line 2 8” round cake pans with parchment paper and spray with non stick spray
6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans smoothing out the top
7. Bake the cakes for 20-25 minutes yntil the cake is golden and is just beginning to shrink from the side of the pan
8. Remove the cakes from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before unmolding them and putting them onto a cooling rack

This is an American translation (takes into account the size of eggs and the type of flour available here) of an English recipe that Alfred Bird came up with after he invented baking powder. Up until this time the only way to make baked goods rise was to use yeast, but his wife was allergic to yeast.
Queen Victoria loved this cake for afternoon tea, and it was then named after her.
There are several options for filling the cake:
- Jam in the middle and a dusting of regular sugar on top, this is the WI (Women’s Institute)
standard and must be presented this way in Victoria Sponge cooking competitions.
- Jam/Fresh raspberries and whipped cream, Queen Victoria’s favorite and the way it was made in
my family – the problem is that it then needs to be refrigerated and I feel that spoils the texture
of the sponge.
- Jam and buttercream/frosting. The American way maybe.

Ran weaves so many melodies, textures, and soft drums in this inimitably beautiful, smart, and jazzy mixtape that brings me to a contemplative state, one where I am holding the energy of those diasporic Coreans in my community, and around the world, who I am connected to through the gift of this mixtape series, and beyond, through our shared ancestral histories of being Corean at all. Within that energy glows the rhythmic echo of oneness with all colonized people today and from all time.

With this edition of the saekdong cover typical of Diasporic Corean Mixtapes, I wanted to bring in the colorway of the Palestinian flag, as well as the net texture present in the keffiyeh, intermingling with the motif of the Korean Unification flag. 

To me, this symbolizes the many parallels between Palestine and Korea, particularly the postwar north of Korea today known as the DPRK. It was the same year of 1948 in which Korea was split into two by the US Military, that on the other side of the globe, Palestine was being pillaged and carved up as well. As in Korea, where today families including those of my paternal grandfather remain separated by an arbitrary militarized border, so too do Palestinians remain exiles from their own villages, farms, cities, ancestral homelands. 

Throughout the 1960s, the leadership of north Korea maintained correspondence with the Palestinian resistance, and even shared military strategies and traded arms. And today, north Korea continues to be maligned, its government borne of anti-colonial resistance labeled as "rogue" by the imperial powers, as much as Palestinian resistance movements are labeled terrorists. All the while, north Korea has suffered from inhumane US embargoes that block essential medicine and agricultural resources that have killed thousands of people, contemporaneously with Israeli embargoes on Gaza that deprive children of basic human necessities like water and flour.

So despite the controversial nature of the Korean Unification flag, which is representative of a persecuted political ideology in south Korea, where pro-reunification activists are frequently harassed and incarcerated under the anti-communist National Security Law, it grounds me. The blue One Korea nestled inside the keffiyeh reminds me of not my roots as a Corean person on that tiny peninsula we call our ancestral home, whether we are from the north, the south, or in the diaspora, but also of our solidarity and connectedness to all colonized people who struggle and resist everywhere.

As we yearn to see a Corea that is one, so we envision a free Palestine from the river to the sea.

Ran Park is a home-taught pianist, self-taught composer, and an ever-evolving experimentalist. Joyful contradictions run throughout her music, from romantic and impressionist classical to free jazz, gospel, Korean folk, and notions of pop. 

With all this unhinged curiosity as her energy source, Ran’s mission is to say ‘yes’ to the child in us; yes to embodying fuller expressions of the many identities we carry. Doing so, she argues, is a necessary step towards generational and collective healing.

"Beneath the cold and iced ledges inside a cavernous cutout through the mountain, an eternal flame blazes and heats the air. The heat circulates the cave. A nearby river splashes into the cave, periodically hitting its flame, never enough to put it out, but just so that it conducts a great steam. A deep reddish hue glows from the flames, blurred with the steam, its bright halo spills out of the cave. 

Beings across the starscape know about this spot. They fly, swim, teleport and dance into it. The sounds of their movements, murmurings and exhales become one with the cycle of heat ensnaring the space.

A large stick brought into the cave by wind strikes the wall, which carries the vibrations and sounds of the heat, pressure, cold waves, and steam cycling. Its sound reverberates from the atoms of the heat and echoes on the walls of the cave. The sound carries across the cold water channel, outward into the depths of the unknown.

Listening through a seashell on the other end of the ocean, is a being playing in the sound, called to hold up the shell to their ear and hear how it was forged. The creatures of the ocean swim through certain sections of the water, where they know the transmission will be reverberant. Like swimming through radio signals, the path from the cave is well traveled.

You are now traveling through the water’s transmission carrying the sound."
