A rough mix from a recording earlier this month. 
This song was inspired by the Mandarin term MIshi Le which means lost generation. I was reading about Chinese culture and how there is a generation in between the industrial revolution and cultural revolution of Mao Tse Tung who have turned from spiritualism and focussed upon material gain and have become lost.

Fear is the new currency turning us against each other, politicians use it, the media uses it and we lap it up. What is it doing to us? Fear releases the fight or flight mode creating tension and anger in already fraught situations. Is this what we need? I yearn for calm measured actions, seeing each other as human beings and these situations as a direct result of ignoring that. This track is a musical exploration of Fear, distracting and tearing us from our compassion.

 

Fear is written in reaction to Brexit and anti-immigration sentiment that pervades into Siobhán’s border life.  She’s got a great community of folks from all over the world from America, England, Syria, Kurdistan and Poland who have very strong reasons to detest borders.

She works in Derry, studied there, plays gigs and has amazing friends there.  If Brexit goes through our peninsula will essentially be cut off the rest of Ireland. During her drives to Derry her car reminds her ‘You’ve crossed the border’ in an English female voice. She used field recordings from the car in the piece. News audio from both sides of the border on the same afternoon are interwoven with pulsing drums, double bass, piano, vocal loops and repetitive lyrics building unease mimicking the media and politicians who pour out this Fear.

 

“I wonder if they ever realise the effect it has on our communities? Lyra McKee was murdered 2 weeks after we shot the video for ‘Fear’. Her murder is the hateful effect these words have.”

'Run Run' explores my depression at a time when everything becomes too much and I need to escape. When I'm this far deep I feel ethereal, on the outside, unable to be present yet knowing that I 'should' be combatting this force.

Sonically speaking Regina Spektor has dinner with Portishead; Great White Lies sound resides in the alley on the way back. Jazz and dark funky soul, permeate through her inventive sound.
From the release of her critically acclaimed debut ep, winning VAI Song of The Year, Great White Lies have grown from strength to strength. Her music has taken them across Ireland, LA & Canada. Gig highlights; supporting Hannah Peel and Feeder, Stendhal, YouBloom, appearances on RTE and BBC television and radio.
