“There’s this older man I work with - a kooky gentleman who’s kind of off his rocker - but at the same time can incite this erudite understanding of the human condition. When I asked him if he had any advice for someone really mulling over some heartache, he chuckled. He said, “an artist cannot paint a tree, unless they examine all aspects of it.” I wrote, Painting of a Tree, as an homage to this idea that this kind of hurt was a truly human experience. Hull-based collective O’Phantom return with their first release since their self-titled, self-funded EP dropped in May this year. The new single, Something (I Know), marks a bold continuation of the band’s introspective, lo-fi sound. Featuring Lucy Jowett (Dead Naked Hippies), the track builds on O’Phantom’s signature aesthetic - melding shimmering guitars, dual harmonies, and ghostly layered vocals to quietly yet powerfully explore themes of loss, ageing, and isolation. 

Fresh from two packed shows at this year’s Great Escape in Brighton and a run of dates across grassroots music venues nationwide, the DIY East Yorkshire outfit embodies the spirit of the UK’s underground music scene - one that values community over social media hype. Songwriter Daniel reflects on the single: “Something (I Know) was the first song we wrote together. It started as a few chords on an acoustic guitar and grew into this brooding, atmospheric post-punk track - thanks in no small part to Rowan’s (bass) knack for deconstructing song structures. Working with Matt Peel (TRAAMS, Yard Act, Honesty) on the recording really brought it to life. We came out with a track we’ll love forever.”

Emerging Indie Bands

Swedish indie rock band Great Hare formed around 2010 when four friends got together after a long hiatus from music. Naming the band after nocturnal chance encounters with wild hares, they turned a loft into a recording studio and brought drums, guitars, tape delay machines, keyboards, pink chorus pedals, an old piano and influences from the post-punk era they grew up in. They turn up at nights looking for melodies that want to be turned into songs. The good ones arrive like waves hitting a beach or echoes of something submerged under the surface.
