The magnificent tenor voice on the Four Rivers’ Sooner Or Later is Californian singer Freddie Hughes, whose Send My Baby Back was a top twenty R&B hit for Wand in 1968. He is often confused with the Arkansas-born Vee-Jay artist, Fred Hughes. The group cut this exciting waltz-time track, Sooner Or Later for Josie in 1962, which is an example of the transitional move from hard gospel to soul: from the gospel shout to the soul shout.
