Una luna brillante le da forma a lo que suena como una sinfonía de insectos. Sin un solo ser humano a kilómetros de distancia, la noche se deja escuchar a su máximo esplendor.

Una noche en Islas Murciélago

We rushed out into the fading darkness of a sleepy town.
The colors that painted the sky doubled in the water beneath our boat.
We got to a lagoon where hundreds of royal cranes are feeding along pink spatulas, blue cranes, storks, ibis, jabirus and other countless birds that are sounding like a million voices.
At the edge of the lagoon trees are still ringing to the sound of crickets, and amplify the waking calls of numerous birds that are getting ready for a new day.
A perfumed tropical flower hangs from a tree named “pachira acuática”, as Dawn takes over this humid paradise.
As their stomachs fill up, the loud birds take off into the foggy horizon which lets out the strong howling of sleepy howler monkeys.

Caño Negro Dawn

We drove towards the top of the mountains to a place where the winds of the Atlantic clash with the warm air of the Pacific. An amplified sound of air fills the forest.
We then entered an abandoned path that’s clearly being swallowed by the mountainous forest. The place is cool and easy with little or no activity except for that of a nest that sounds nearby.
As wind picks up it sounds in motion from deep below the mountain and over the forest, letting a shy sun appear between the clouds.
Some branches crack and others snap, inciting more birds to join the noise of this fresh late Noon.

Monteverde noon

5:45 pm
We got to Orosi just in time for our Dusk session. Our base this time is at monte sky lodge, deep in the mountains that are embraced by an enormous rainforest.
As clouds fill the air, the song of millions of insects surrounds our spot. Dozens of birds sing along to a chaotic natural voice. A river sounds close by in a steady flow that sounds refreshing even in this moist paradise.
Clearly a transition from day to night is taking place. More and more sounds awake as others become silent slowly.
A new adventure is taking place in this eternal forest as we begin our understanding of this new spot and it’s language. As darkness takes over, the place is filled with fireflies. We fall into the mystic way of this fabulous dusk.

Orosi Dusk

6:55 am
A new day begins with a blowing wind that heads off shore. The sun is held back by a tall hill that keeps a low light until mid morning.
There’s a path that runs besides the shore, between the royal estuary and a strip of land. The estuary is completely dry due to the low tide and the dryness of this season. It now looks like a light colored road of minerals, where more white tailed deer are easily spotted. The wind brushes the leaves of the mangrove as dozens of parrots wake up and fly in pairs, making sounds of dawn fall from the air. The higher pitch of parakeets follows the parrots to a nearby place where a feasting breakfast occurs. A new round-up happens with Dawn. Stay tuned fore more, Monteverde up next!

Santa Rosa Dawn

As the sun comes out, a new day is brought to life in this forest. Birds seem to cling to a fading dream. They sound sleepy and their calls increase with the light of day.
Not far away, the ocean sounds fierce as an open coast receives a large swell.
Insects buzz their morning calls, with their own mating rhythm filling this humid air. They often fly around us sounding like flying machines that pass by.
Its a very still morning, a relaxed noise covers the scene. A blue cloudless sky is seen far behind the branches of the tall trees. As life continues to wake up the forest speaks in the sounds of Dawn.

Carara Dawn

It’s a night of a full moon. The light makes its way into the forest ground. Millions of insects sound together like a voice of electric frequency.
Leaves on trees and on the ground make cracking sounds as night creatures such as raccoons make their way into the night. The air is calm and heavy in this forest that mixes dry forest and rainforest characteristics.
With some concentration you can make out individual noises that mix in the night. From crickets to bats, all together in this summer Midnight.

Carara Midnight

5:35 pm
As another day ends the forest falls in darkness. A light rain pours from the clouds that pass by. Birds return to their nests in joyous calls. The wind still blows above, filling the air with a mist of cold. This rain keeps the forest in harmony raising a new nighttime.
Once again a bird plays melodies of rusty hinges and green darkness. Bats and night birds hurry to the scene, while far within the flora insects activate their calls. Toads and frogs begin to ring their rolling noise in this great Dusk.
We’ve concluded with this Session the first four Spots of many else to come. Stay tuned for the next GNSessions at Cabo Blanco!

Monteverde Dusk

Oropendolas are birds that live within the forest. They are colonial breeders, with several long woven basket nests in a tree, each hanging from the end of a branch.
These gregarious birds eat large insects and fruit.

Finca Sensoria
It’s been exactly two months since our last recording. It definitely feels good to be back in the forest looking for more GreenNoise. This time we’re far north, in the northern side of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. We were invited to Finca Sensoria by owner Fernando Madrigal who showed interest in our project and goals. This place beholds a humid and lively tropical rainforest. The property is on the Caribbean slope, which is characterized by a humid and moist climate. Our alarms went off at 4:30am. After a 5 minute snooze we jumped out of our bunks at the sound of the first Howler Monkey. It marked the start of Dawn. We walked into the forest in darkness. It still sounded like nighttime but the clearing pink sky showed us otherwise. Soon the howlers weren’t the only ones waking up; dozens of birds began to sound from all around. As the sky lights up it leaves at plain sight majestic nature. Dense forest covers all of this property. A river sounds nearby in constant energy. The ground is moist and rich. It seems to us we’re up for a new and wild adventure that has just begun with today’s Dawn.

Rincón de la Vieja Dawn

It’s a sunny noon in this incredible forest. Trees grow high above us, providing shelter for dozens of birds that sound in joyous noise. You know when your in a tropical jungle when everything grows from, on and out of everything. This ecosystem is intense and in survival mode. Plants grow out of the ground and into the sun. We hiked into the forest heading towards the Volcano. On our path we ran into many wild plants and trees. Some of these are endemic to this particular zone, such as the “Cacho de Danta”. This strange tree grows white flowers and pickle-like fruits from its bark. A light breeze picks up as noon takes over this paradise. Leaves filter the air as it passes and cools down the humid forest. Morpho Butterflies wave clumsily along the air. They flash their deep electric blue wings as we try to follow with our lenses. It’s a great combination of light over tones of green that endlessly cover this land. The forest soothes everything in it’s tones of Noon. After our session we continued our hike through the forest and found a magical place not far away from the active crater.

Another amazing day is coming to an end at the base of this great mountain. Day turns into night in a still ambience. Birds sound in steady calls, some return to their nests and shelters while others are only starting their nocturnal routine. Howlers fill the air with their thick voices that travel from far away. The forest seems distinctively mellow and in tranquility. As night falls, insects become more and more intense. It’s been an incredible day marked by green flora, magnificent fauna and amazing rivers of cold water and blue tones. All this experience wraps up in this great Dusk.

The sunny weather wasn’t going to last forever in this showing rainy season. A couple of hours after our noon session winds picked up and started blowing grey tropical clouds towards the shore. Lightning began what seemed like the perfect tropical storm. The sky turned grey and rainfall poured silencing everyone and everything around. Lightning and consequent thunder rattled the land as the great storm took control of our visit. We let the weather settle before we ventured into the forest. Damp leaves dripped with purified water. The sky turned from a powerful blue to a deep black as dusk turned its face. The floor was covered with wet critters and lively toads that seemed to come to life with the overflowing water. As drops drum through leaves the sky seems to settle down. Thunder fills the atmosphere as if saying good bye for the moment. The forest floor drains pure water that fulfills a new cycle. As we set our mic we greatfully wrap up our visit to Manuel Antonio. The sounds of Dusk behold a magical harmony that prizes our visit to this amazing park.

El apacible sonido de los bosques de Costa Rica se escuchó hoy por primera vez en cadena de radio a través del Programa Panorama, de la Cámara Nacional de Radio (CANARA).
Ni música, ni noticias, ni anuncios, ni debates...solo el cautivador sonido de las aves, los monos y otros animales del bosque mezclados con el canto de las ramas movidas por el viento... Eso fue lo que se escuchó hoy durante un minuto, poco después de las 7 de la mañana, en las 73 emisoras afiliadas a la Cámara Nacional de Radio, las cuales se enlazan diariamente.

The gentle sounds of the forests of Costa Rica was heard for the first time today on radio station through the Panorama program of the National Radio (Canara).
No music, no news, no ads, no debates ... only the captivating sound of birds, monkeys and other forest animals mixed with the singing of the branches blowing in the wind ... That's what we heard today during a minute, shortly after 7 am, at the 73 stations affiliated with the National Radio, which are linked daily.
GreenNoise, creating awareness that forests are as alive as we are! Respect and care for nature, it is what gives us life!

Our alarms went off at 4:45 am this morning. Night was still clenching the jungle in darkness. We decided to take the same trail since it leads away from the shore and into the mountain. As usual, howlers were the first waking up. Their howls do not snooze though. Instead they seem to become more intense as dawn unfolds. Clearly dawn finds its way from sea level where it becomes day first, and penetrates slowly within the jungle. At a midpoint in the trail we heard a strange bird known as Cripturellus soui that marked our recording spot. To our surprise, a group of squirrel monkeys dozed above, waking up in playful squeaks and growls. After leaving our mic we continued our way to a view point. The sounds of midnight ceased as new sounds became louder and more intense. Monkeys, birds and insects take control of this session. We see this time what was hidden by last nights darkness. A trail of green that elevates inside the forest and often opens up to a majestic view of a large and mystic Pacific Ocean. The Jungle delights all our senses: green and gold tones, tropical scents, spiny branches, tasty fruits and awesome GreenNoise. The sun rises slowly but surely inviting all creatures to sing the sounds of dawn.

Manuel Antonio Dawn

Manuel Antonio is one of Costa Rica’s most popular national parks. It is visited by thousands of tourists, students and scientists for it beholds vast wildlife. Our midnight adventure marks the beginning of our journey through this tropical paradise. We began our hike at 9 pm. A trail led us through a warm and humid jungle that isn’t shy at all. It shows us its secrets as we shine our flashlights cutting along the dark night. Insects crawl from all around, suddenly flying against us or just sliding away from our feet and hiding within the fallen leaves. This place greeted us with great weather conditions. It’s a still night with no rain that lets gloomy stars shine above. Our path was clearly dangerous. We are quite aware of the venomous snakes that inhabit the area, but that awareness turns into amaze when a small snake is spotted along the path. Avoiding venomous fangs we continued our way along colorful mushrooms and sneaking toads. Large spiders webbed their death traps from branch to branch. We set our mic close to a stream. It sounds in soothing harmony as it flows towards the sea. Mixed with the electric buzz of dozens of insects. As we wait patiently in our hammocks, bats fly above us fighting for dinner. They flap their wings close to our heads disguised in the deep darkness of Midnight.

Manuel Antonio Midnight

After Dawn, the sun shined brightly over this humid jungle. The air was thick and heavy. We took our gear and strolled across the beach. We headed towards the Catedral Trail which would take us around the whole the park. Manuel Antonio is the smallest National Park in Costa Rica and has been rated in fifth place along the worlds best National Parks for animal sighting. Although this time the path led us through a shy jungle. It bordered the parks cliffs which fall into the deep blue ocean. Viewpoint after viewpoint we admired the scenery as we searched for the perfect sound. The hot climate and the ringing cicadas gave a summer feeling except for the increasing thunder that sounded near by. We got to a spot that seemed to combine various sounds. A strip flowed slowly and quietly. The ocean crashed steadily against the rocks, and thunder rolled above. In the distance, howlers sounded as if greeting a possible rainstorm. We ventured down to the beach again to enjoy the clear blue ocean that flows along the energy of this Noon.
