From the composer: Trio In Memoriam was composed in 1989 for the Aequalis Chamber Ensemble, on commission from the Massachusetts Arts Council New Works Program. Shortly after receiving the commission for this piece I heard the sad news of Paul Fromm's death. I could think of nothing else but to write a memorial work. Mr. Fromm was a great source of encouragement and inspiration for American composers, and we are all eternally grateful to him. As patron, scholar, and spokesman he was the most dedicated advocate of the contemporary composer this country has ever seen. His work lives on in the foundation that bears his name, and his spirit lives on in the hundreds of compositions he inspired. -Rand Steiger

Trio In Memoriam

Linea by Luciano Berio for two pianos, vibraphone, and marimba. Performed by Nicholas Loh and Ashley Zhang, pianos; Greg Jukes, vibraphone; and Matt Sharrock, marimba. Recorded live at the SICPP Iditarod on June 22, 2013 in Boston, MA.

Linea is the first work Berio composed expressly for dance – Felix Blaska was the choreographer for the first performance – but it certainly can be programmed as a purely musical piece. For long stretches, each of the two pianists plays one-handed, frequently unisono with the percussion instruments. But even when the pianists play four-hands and Berio uses chords, the music retains its delicacy, thanks to the composer’s preference for the high register. This is crystalline music – or music like icicles.

Greg Jukes is a percussionist and narrator with an interest in work that brings together music, acting, and dance in new and creative ways. As a founding member of The Fourth Wall, a hybrid arts ensemble in which musicians are also actors and dancers, Greg has performed and taught across the United States. Greg regularly narrates with orchestras in the mid-Atlantic and mid-west.
