[Photo © 2013, The New York Times Inc]. This is a Performance by New York City tradional jazz & swing collective, Gotham Jazzmen from Oct. 13, 2019. The band features a rotating cast of characters—this date was led by original founding member￼ Lee Lorenz* on cornet and founding pianist/vocalist/historian Pete Socolow. Rounding out the band: Greg Burrows on drums (with no bass drum … subbing for original member & weekly regular Ed Bonoff)￼￼, Bob Curtis/soprano sax, Jim Collier/trombone, and Dave Hofstra reliably driving the whole thing with his bass.
*Sadly, Mr. Lorenz was struggling with encroaching dementia and this was one of his final performances with the band after some 40+ years of loyal service. This great man was cartoon editor for the New Yorker magazine for many years (and a noted cartoonist and contributor to the magazine as well). He also co-led the Creole Cookers band at Arthur’s Tavern in Greenwich Village, nearly every Sunday night for approximately 45 years￼￼.

An impromptu music by Captains of Industry Orchestra, a New York/Connecticut-based duo comprised of drummer/percussionist/electronic musician Greg Burrows, and guitars Bill Bartosik. Both musicians achieve a 'larger-than-life' sonic palate by enhancing and surrounding their base instruments (guitar, drum) with effects pedals, laptop-driven digital audio workstations, and the like. All the Captains' music is established spontaneously with a minimum of discussion/planning beforehand but with certain foundation 'rules': listen, leave space, find melodys, interact, and if it's working, celebrate/enjoy it! One full day's work: I love the lilt and rapid-yet-chill intensity of drum & bass. It's a challenge to build a good beat, and I added to it by improvising a drum solo over it in the middle, using finger drumming on the 16 pads of Maschine. This will be enhanced with a vocal and added to my upcoming CD.

Here's a digital remix of a Rochester, NY performance of the exasperated, bouncy tune (supposedly an ode to an electrical fan in the band's business office), 'BERTHA' (composer: Jerry Garcia; lyrics: Robert Hunter. Copyright Ice Nine Publishing). 

This is not and will not be for sale or profit--it's just a musical tribute. The original recording, purchased from iTunes, is from a performance in Rochester, NY in 1971. Incidentally, it was one of Keith Godchaux's first gigs with the Dead, supposedly--and his robust piano work highlighted amply in my remix (in some great interplay with Jerry).

Bertha Revisited - Greg Burrows - Grateful Dead

A highlight of my summer 2015 happened in Manchester, Vermont, when I had the privilege of performing as guest artist on jazz drums, with the Manchester Music Festival String Quartet, in an evening which included two classic Dave Brubeck Quartet staples: here's the first--Take Five, composed by Paul Desmond. My teacher and friend Joe Morello played the iconic drum solo on the original recording. Here, I had the glorious challenge of delivering a drum solo with an excellent string quartet.

Nearly forgotten through the clouds of time, Bebe Eiffel was the predecessor group of the current pychedelic cumbia phenomenon Chicha Libre (of which Greg Burrows was also a member, along with Conan and Vincent).  Bebe Eiffel would elicit raucous, enthusiastic reactions at their Lower East Side gigs in the late 1990s (usually at The Living Room) or in the earliest days of the Park Slope bar/music venue Barbès.
