A Night in the Skull Discotheque by the beloved underground selector CCL is the latest offering in the T4T LUV NRG label’s highly limited DJ mix series of cassettes. This immersive journey through a wonderland of proto-dubstep sounds from the late 1970s through the year 2000 is a sonic sibling to CCL’s acclaimed 2018 mix Ode to Queer Steppas.

Inspired in part by Eris Drew’s use of “old records to create new styles out of fragments” on her Raving Disco Breaks Vol. 1 mixtape (T4T LUV NRG, 2019), CCL approached this recording with a parallel frame of mind. Created with 3 CDJs, one Turntable, and a Boss Digital Delay 200, the tracks included in the mix are deconstructed from their whole, and constituent parts are intertwined, sampled, and dubbed out while being further stretched beyond their physical limits. CCL mixed many tracks at the 'wrong speed', pitched beyond their original recognizable tone; others are recontextualized through imaginative layering.

With a solid nod to seminal mixtapes of the early 90s, CCL references the namesake for Side A, Bass Is Eternal, an unreleased 1992 mixtape by influential Bristolian producers Smith & Mighty, an important sonic fulcrum amongst the musical tributaries of the hardcore continuum that continues to reverberate to this day. CCL experienced the after-effects of this ‘proto’ sound genesis in 2008, while living in Bristol, by which point its emergent whispers had coalesced into what became known as dubstep. Tracing a rich history of reference through the samples, basslines, moods, and drum patterns emanating from Bass Is Eternal while looking for connections that predate it became a long-term fascination for CCL. The result is a DJ mix that connects the oft-forgotten dots between proto eras and modern developments in bass and dubstep.

For the resulting sonic ride on A Night in the Skull Discotheque, CCL leads us to a fantastical place of timeless surreality – a majestic haunted dancehall soundtracked by a giddy rush of steppers and dubbed-out delights. Subs rattle through syncopated percs, and moody synths glisten in macabre glory. Fantastical dancers wriggle in wispy eternity, liberated from their corporeal forms in all their greatest spiritual wonder. Both extravagant and dusky, A Night in the Skull Discotheque is a world of seductive in-betweens, a place caught between the moodiest depths and the highest exuberance – A love letter to one of the most impactful formative sounds of the last decades.

The Mixtec are indigenous Mesoamerican peoples inhabiting the modern day Mexican states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Puebla in a region known as La Mixteca. The Mixtecan languages form an important branch of the Otomanguean linguistic family.

In pre-Columbian times, the Mixtec were one of the major civilizations of Mesoamerica. Important ancient centers of the Mixtec include the ancient capital of Tilantongo, as well as the sites of Achiutla, Cuilapan, Huajuapan, Mitla, Tlaxiaco, Tututepec, Juxtlahuaca, and Yucu–udahui.

The term Mixtec (Mixteco in Spanish) comes from the Nahuatl word Mixtecapan, or "place of the cloud-people" or "people of the rain place."

Mente Orgánica feat. Lapola Kalu - La Llanura (SidiRum Remix)

I had the immense privilege of opening proceedings on Friday night in room 1 at Freerotation 2018. As is customary when I DJ at Freerotation, the set on the night fell victim to distortion so this recording is actually a reconstruction as faithful as I can be to how it went down. The wobbles may be different ones, but hopefully reflect the natural weave of my set. I did consider re-writing history and sending the ending in a different direction - at the end of two hours I could have gone on longer and the deadline forced my hand a little more than it should have done, but I decided to keep it pure, warts and all. Either way, it was a dream come true to feel bass frequencies of records I love blowing wind from the subs around my ankles, and I hope you enjoy it...

Freerotation 2018 - Friday night - Room 1 - opening set - redux

Festival No.6 has been a yearly highlight of recent times, its location unique. Tucked away on the North Wales coast in a magical village and famous as the location for the classic ’60s TV show ‘The Prisoner’, Portmeirion is truly a place plucked out of the imagination – an Italian fantasy creation of architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who designed and built it over a 50-year period.

Unfortunately the September weather often fails to rise to the occasion, which was apparently the case on Saturday. I played on the Sunday, my 3rd appearance at Village Limits in its enchanted woodland environment, complete with floating dancefloor (you don’t see one of those every day) beneath a huge mirrorball. 

As we set out on the drive it was in hope, rather than expectation, that the rain would hold off, and I’m pleased to report that the gods were with us, people able to dance to their heart's content without getting soaked wet through in the process. It turned out to be a fitting Village Limits finale, not just for this year, but until the festival returns – next year they’ve decided to take a sabbatical to re-strategize for the future, with many people left wondering if this could be the last one, at least in its current guise.

If so, it’ll certainly be missed by my friends and family – we always arrive pretty mob handed, lots of people heading in from Merseyside and Manchester, linking up with others from far and wide. I have to say that the production and artist liaison was outstanding this year, everyone invested in what they’re doing and setting the right environment for those performing. Special thanks to Amy and Jenna, such lovely people to be looking after you.

The full recording is now up on SoundCloud, available to stream/download. It was a gig that was sandwiched between an afternoon talk in the Dome Gallery and closing the VIP area between 11-1, which was big fun!

I really hope Festival No.6 will be back after a year’s hiatus, there's nothing quite like it. If not there’ll be many happy memories of gigs in a variety of special spaces. Its surreal quality is something that sets it apart, and all the creative set-building in the world can only provide a façade of what here is real and permanent. 

But even with all that, it comes down to the crowds you play for, and those at No.6 make the most of the surroundings, regardless of the weather, partying through a weekend like no other. Thanks to all of you who’ve partied away to the tunes I’ve played there during the past 6 years on this spectacular festival site.
