Here is the World Premiere of Aaron Alter's "Homage to Josquin" on June 28, 2015 at the Santa Fe Flute Immersion at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The performers were Linda Marianiello and Susan Levitin, flutes, Jacquelyn Helin, piano and Aaron Alter "playing" the electric bass and drum parts on his MacBook Pro computer.

Homage to Josquin combines themes from the Renaissance master, Josquin Des Prés with a symphonic piano part and a "Classic Rock" rhythm section.  Despite its rock influence, the form of Homage to Josquin is very classical in design, similar to first movements of sonatas, string quartets and symphonies of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.  In the sections where the flutes are playing without the piano, you can imagine being transported back in time to early 16th century Italy, where Josquin's music was being performed in the chapels of the rich and powerful, similar to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, where the premiere was performed.

Homage to Josquin was awarded an Honorable Mention from the 2016-2017 American Prize competition, Chamber Music Composition Division.  For more information on Homage to Josquin and other works by Aaron Alter, please visit https://aaronalter.com/compositions .

Tom Waits (on Jim Wilson): "Wilson, he's always playing with time. I heard a recording recently of crickets slowed way down. It sounds like a choir, it sounds like angel music. Something sparkling, celestial with full harmony and bass parts - you wouldn't believe it. It's like a sweeping chorus of heaven, and it's just slowed down, they didn't manipulate the tape at all. So I think when Wilson slows people down, it gives you a chance to watch them moving through space. And there's something to be said for slowing down the world."

Composed by Polina Nazaykinskaya for her long-time creative partner Konstantin Soukhovetski, Sparks is inspired the enigma of Cosmos. 
The perfect epigraph to it are the words of American cosmologist Carl Sagan:
“The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us -- there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory,
of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries.”
The musical fabric of Sparks is simply there – we join it for the time being to be pulled into its magnificent gravitational pull – but what it conveys is not the finite realm of human condition but
the pulsation of the ever-expanding cosmos; breathing, evolving, unraveling before us in its infinite variety. Neither good nor bad, evil or kind, brief or everlasting – the universe of Sparks is omnipresent, continuous marvel to which we are all but invited guests.
