I recently bought this tape for $0.10 and it had test tones for calibrating two portable Marantz tape recorders. I decided to make them the focus of this improvisation. Here's what I used:

In trying to guide my work under my Canada Council for the Arts Research + Creation grant, I decided to start by asking the question: what can I do without touching my horn? 

Equipment and techniques used:

-feedback saxophone, manipulating positioning (no fingers) and EQ (via pedals and amp) as well as some effects on the CUBE30 amp (mostly tremolo).

-Sony TCM 939 tape recorder, with a home-made 8s tape loop, an electromagnetic pickup, and a contact mic on the tape itself. I had foil over the erase head so I could do "sound on sound" and create the loop in real-time. I played with the pause button to shift the pitch of the pickup and mess with speed.

-These were all patched through KOMA Elektronik Field Kit, which I used to live mix, send signal to the tape recorder, and play with tone.

Lots of wild sounds, and I'm excited about the possibilities for more sounds and transforming this process from experiment to something more structured.

Two summers ago I made a sample library of an old AM radio that I broke open and messed with. I've been edited the library and turning the samples into instruments using Sampler on Ableton. I lol'ed a lot making this. Enjoy!

Greg Bruce is a student of Wallace Halladay. 

Greg Bruce is a woodwind player, composer, and educator from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As a veteran of the indie, classical, jazz, and experimental music scenes of his hometown, he can be heard playing with a wide variety of groups and on numerous recordings. Greg splits his time between Ontario, where he studies at the University of Toronto, and Newfoundland and Labrador. As part of the Doctor of Musical Arts program at U of T, Greg studies electroacoustic saxophone music and is composing for a newly invented saxophone-feedback system.

Greg Bruce is a woodwind player, composer, and educator from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. As a veteran of the indie, classical, jazz, and experimental music scenes of his hometown, he can be heard playing with a wide variety of groups and on numerous recordings. In addition to having thoroughly toured Eastern Canada, he has performed in the US and Europe.

His main creative output for the past several years has been composing for and leading the award-winning “world-beat-party-jazz” group, Ouroboros. In 2017, Greg was commissioned by the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra to write Spear and Sand, which was premiered in April 2018.

Currently, Greg lives in Ontario where he is pursuing his doctoral studies at the University of Toronto. As part of his research, Greg is composing for a new amplified-saxophone-feedback system that he invented, as well as studying jazz and classical approaches to electroacoustic saxophone.
