PH17, the Leipzig-based label by Solaris and Stanley Schmidt returns back to business with an EP by Leipzig’s very own DJ YumYum. Mostly known for his releases on Defrostatica and his activism in the local Rave-scene, “Decisions” marks his first full-length release setting a high standard defining his own sound somewhere between „Artefaxian“-ultra-HD glitches and the highly energetic rave sound known by artists like Schacke et al. The release appears physically as a rarely limited M-Disc, an online-piece and graphic design by Anja Kaiser.

The name of the EP describes the creative process leading to this music: Drawing from a sufficient sound pallet and technique, all left to be done is taking aesthetic decisions.

In these times of desillusion – besides the quest for overcoming capitalism – sound can achieve a certain autonomy, where something like a meaning can be preserved, at least partly being able to escape the determination of the destructive social forces determining us. In Electronic music there can be the anticipation of the use of the forces of production, modern technology, for the human benefit, not its self-destruction. This piece of music would like to be a contribution to this.

About the Artist:

DJ YumYum is an electronic musician from Leipzig. Besides cheap instant food and the world revolution he is mostly interested in modern, ravey, fast and experimental electronic sounds which he produces, digs and tries to spread within the Electronic music community. Having a background in Jazz music, he tries to push complex yet physical music to an effort reminding of the radical roots of Rave.

Next up is Measure Divide. This year, the Karachi-born, Toronto-based producer released his first record after a five year hiatus on Cleric's imprint Clergy. Here he pushes a fresh take on techno with weird yet interesting sound design. However, he far from an unknown figure in the scene. The past years he has been ½ of the MDD duo, releasing tracks on AnD's Inner Surface and South London Analogue Material. Apart from that he's also organized several parties in Toronto, inviting artists as DVS1 and Blawan. For the next hour, be ready for one of our picks as artist to watch in 2022!

Measure Divide | Artaphine Series 083

At only eighteen years old, Paris DJ and producer u.r.trax has a C.V that would make most seasoned selectors blush. Blending the innocence of youth with a ferocious production palette, the emerging techno star has already played Concrete, Dehors Brut and La Toilette, and has released on Hector Oaks Kaos label, having become infatuated with the sound at a young age - even visiting Tresor at just fourteen!

From death comes rebirth, and on ‘Dying Generation' u.r.trax flies the flag for future-gazing doof with its twisting, left-field turns and throbbing noise. An instant Berlin classic. The glitch and suspense of ‘What Was On Their Mind’ melts into the ravers core; alarm bells ring, heartbeats race and eyes widen on its six minute journey.

The headsy vibes on ‘You Are Your Own Distraction’ is a welcome switch-up, it’s punchy kicks and bouncy aesthetic inviting the listener to dance as weird as they want, before the techno tradition is dropped in favour of hefty cut of electro flavour, moulding the artists own vocals with her production for a “Miss Kitten 2.0” vibe.

Galaxial atmospherics, horror-synths and anxious energy bow us out on ‘Race Against Time’, completing the package with a furious digi-only rework from MRD.
