Deliberating on my role
The deepest chasm full of conflict
Of all the feelings in my soul
To care I can’t, seems i’ve been tricked

This barren wasteland is the news
Disgusting plot, distorted views
Good and evil spawns thoughts and sighs
And so begins the long goodbye

Questions, bloody questions
Words best kept confined
The ones that roam about inside
Like rodents, rats and mice
It’ s what you built this prison for
Yet still you come to hide
Don’t mention this
Or goodbye bliss
It’s time to choose a side

Take these words and make of them what you will
For this sweetest of treasure belongs to me and me alone
Stuck up here on my sun trap balcony
In blissful harmony with natures tranquil choir
It is a scene that taught me what it is to wonder —
Yet I have stood through storms of riotous thunder
Watched all my dreams get blown away
Loved ones set their sails to leave far from memory bay
As white turns to grey then to black
Growth itself appeared so rich yet being alone’s the prize
I plead with darkness to shield me now, keep me free
Please don’t let them shine their lights down upon me

I clambered up toward this so called mountains peak
Trying to break myself free from all the vandals of life
Away, away! I cried out, Scoot! Begone!
Living in my own shadow yet no shackles on an ego
Lost in a mist of trepidation
Lost soul and heart with information
To be liked or not to be liked
What gives you the right
Invasive, persuasive, they’re coming to see
Please, don’t let them shine their lights down upon me

To whom do I write these letters of love?
These letters passed down from some kingdom above
For what would he know of devotion and trust?
Or to know only lust is never enough

Easy to find be it land, sky or sea
Notably absent when your eyes fall on me
It sails and flies with both mercy and pity
I long for the country but dwell in the city

Drenched in these tears; can belong only to you
Creation so many yet good in so few
Wretched keep talking with both knife and gun
I keep asking myself, oh what have you done?

Awake in the morning to the debris of dreams
Tears in abundance thinking what might have been

(So this is debris of dreams reworked to the form of a John Clare sonnet in that it adheres to the AABB-CCDD-EEFF-GG rhyme scheme, has 14 lines; three quatrains and a couplet but with regards to meter don’t ask as I really struggle with this, especially on a line to line basis as some seem like iambic pentameter yet others seem different. As far as I understand it, that’s supposed to be five iambs (da-DUMs) yet the sylablle count for my sonnet is 10-11-11-11-10-11-11-12-11-11-10-10-12-11) I’m so confused haha


Debris of dreams

Go home all you leeches
Or wait, what?
Now we’re all friends
There’s nothing to see here
Not much being shown
Except a lack of respect
These customs, traditions
Seems to me like time’s turned them to stone
These lives we all lead
Take us further from home

They seen us
and pushed us
Then turned us away
Heard all we said
Saw the things that we did
Laughed like it was funny
Then gave up our lives
Now here we all are; albeit separate roads
Retelling same stories through letters and notes

There’s a man in a basement with his head in his hands
Can’t understand the ways of the world
All the cruel things it demands
Sure he has two eyes but really what did he see?
He saw a knife
Killed his wife
Murder second degree

Dining with retrospect
He lost his mind
Seemed so vivid and clear
He just couldn’t figure
Got nowhere close
Yet no stranger to desire
Spent his life always chasing
Til time tarnished him bitter
Now lost amongst the crowds
He’s back in among the theives
Some say he was sorry
Others say he boast
And wrote it all down in letters and notes

It wasn’t a vision or dream that he had
Like a trees abscission
The scars told the story
When leaves start to fall
Cruel winds go a wander
Past bone-like branches
Of once steadfast trees
Listen to the whistle
No wait…
Maybe it’s a whisper
Only fools lived for glory

The only question to ask

Help me forget this city where I dwell
The grey granite walls I now know so well
My dreams gone adrift in the oceans outside
Among the sharks and the tide we all know as life
So help me forget the extent of my sins
Seven most deadly deep within every skin
They come and go cut me up like a cake
Till there’s not much left and i’ve nothing to trade
So please, help me forget all of my troubles
Lacklustre love and obligatory cuddles
Family, friends and the foe that’s myself
Put value on money instead of our health

Cruelest

Just some run of the mill routine social trash spouting some good ol' vague nonsense that may on occasion adhere to poetry in content and structure... that is to say i'm nervously putting together words in a somewhat poetic manner while trying to learn about form and meter etc...

'Cruelest' was published in the National Poetry Anthology 2017.
