Jungle - part 2

Rift makes a powerful return on Dispatch Limited with the Black & Gold EP, a five-track collection that marks a fresh chapter in his sound. After stepping back from production to reset his creative direction, Rift channels a rawer approach, drawing on the influence of early 2000s drum & bass while weaving in the tense, atmospheric qualities of cinematic scores. The result is an EP that feels both stripped-back and expansive, balancing heavy pressure with eerie, suspenseful sound design.

The project is also shaped by visual art. The title track, “Black & Gold,” was the first piece written for the EP, sparked by inspiration from Bill Elis’ artwork. The visual tone of his work set the foundation not only for the track itself but also for the identity of the full release.

Across the EP, Rift explores themes of unease and intensity. From the brooding atmospheres of “Teardrops” and “Paralysed” to the rolling momentum of “Tremors” and “Sinners,” the journey culminates in the title track’s stark and cinematic presence. Each cut feels deliberately crafted, reflecting both a reverence for drum & bass history and a forward-focused creative vision.

The Black & Gold EP has already gained strong support across the scene, with Philth playing a central role in championing the tracks both in sets and during the production process. Additional support has come from Enta and Cause4Concern, underlining the impact of Rift’s return.

When artists with the pedigree of Drumsound & Bassline Smith drop an album, it’s big news. With roots stretching back to the absolute foundations of rave music, this production team has legendary status. While keeping their underground credentials intact, they’ve been able to achieve mainstream chart success, perform on some of the biggest stages this music has to offer, and bring through many other monumental artists in their role as bosses of Technique Recordings. So this brand new collection of material is, no doubt about it, going to create waves.

With the first assured, slick bass tones and the eponymous vocal in the intro of Come With Me, we’re delivered straight into the big room sound that has set parties alight across the world. As the tune builds and drops, though, it becomes something diferent. There’s a dirty, grinding mid-range bass to get that screwface going. There are sonic references to other Drumsound & Bassline Smith tunes for the real fans to spot. As soul, filth, and production flourishes combine, we’re being shown the blueprint for the rest of the album.

You see, there are hints at a junglist past in tunes like Warrier and Ouija, but combined with the huge sound that the DBS studio is capable of creating. That collision of old and new comes to a head most clearly in the Brinsley Forde-laced Beautiful Danger, as gorgeous reggae vocals blend into a tear-out bassline-led rave-wrecker.

And then there are the nods to Drumsound & Bassline Smith’s history in the recon gured versions of Odyssey and Outlaw Renegade. These tunes, originally released a decade apart, both share the distinction of crossing sub-genre boundaries, and are as likely to be heard in a jump-up party as on a festival main stage. The inclusion of them here provides a marker of just how representative of the whole DnB scene these producers really are.

Of course, this overview barely scratches the surface. There’s the cinematic majesty of the collaboration with Prolix, Welcome to the Machine. There’s the gangsta funk of Roadblock, and the skank-out call-and-response of Technique Badboy. There’s the skippy syncopation of Control. There are subtleties and gems to be discovered throughout the whole album, as much a treat for the listener as for the raver.

So, this, their third LP, is like a gallery exhibit of the many facets of Drumsound & Bassline Smith. Their past, their present, and maybe their future, is laid out in intricate detail and with the sheen of sheer production class which marks them out from the crowd. Every tune on this album tells a chapter of their story while simultaneously being a straight-up banger. There aren’t many producers who could pull that off , but this is Drumsound & Bassline Smith were talking about here. So, of course they can.

B. Missing & Nemy - Perplex [OUT NOW]

Over the past year or so, Paul Woolford has kept himself extremely busy with his jungle- and UK hardcore-inspired Special Request project, somehow finding the time to drop an album and a 'Fabriclive' mix along with numerous EPs. On July 27, another EP called 'Through the Looking Glass' is set to arrive via the ever-reliable Houndstooth label. And while the bulk of the record is devoted to reworks of his material by the likes of techno superstar Nina Kraviz and rising talent Anastasia Kristensen, there's also one new track to be found: "Looking Glass." Everyone loves a banging remix, and here at Lifestyle we’re no different. Historically one of the most fun & exciting projects to put together, we’re back with the third edition of our Lifestyle Remixed series!

It’s a pretty simple recipe: we take bangers, give them to some sick producers, who turn them into further bangers; it’s sick, and the results are always fantastic. Previous editions have seen some god-tier combinations: Zero T & Revaux, Ill Truth & Lockjaw, and Signal & Vorso, to name but a few.

For this edition, we’ve plumbed our catalogue for a mixture of deep cuts and stand-out bangers, and got some of our favourite producers to break them into bits and build them back up again. The tracklist speaks for itself, but it’s got to be heard to be believed! We’ve got Wingz remixing Black Barrel, Revaux taking on dutch newcomer DOt., the mighty Black Barrel reworking the breakout banger ‘Africa’, the boy wonder himself remixing Nami’s iconic ‘Inside ft 'Lo’, Fre4knc taking on an Objectiv banger, as well as Danger’s competition-winning remix of ‘Vermin’. Bossman Animus twists up Revaux & Charli Brix’s ‘Colours’, one of our biggest tunes from 2018 getting a seriously brucked out edit, and Belgian badboys Glÿph take Nami’s ’Shake The Universe’ to truly galactic planes, wicked.

As well as all that, to celebrate ten years as a label, we’ve also reached all the way back to LFS020, and got Synth Ethics & Was A Be to team up, reworking Viscera by Ed:it - updating the banger 7.5 years after it’s initial release! Crafting it into a big, stinky stepper, beautiful stuff.

You can probably imagine the program; it’s all kept pretty dark & dangerous this time round, complex bass design leaks out all over the shop, and there’s not much relenting from start to finish, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Some of these have been doing the rounds a bit, causing absolute carnage whenever we play them out, some of them are brand spanking new, but we think you’ll agree they’re all hurters. It’s been an absolute joy to put together this release, so we hope you like hearing it as much as we’ve liked making it!

Jabba makes his debut on Program and he does so in an explosive fashion. The Germany based producer provides a four-track EP which will align you with his sounds whilst adding a package of new music to Ram’s sister label.

The first part of the ‘Radius’ EP’s track list is ‘Alarm’, with each section of its framework punctuated by shuddering bass notes. ‘Break Dem’ follows with more hypnotising rhythms meanwhile ‘PNGNT’ merges its melodies with scuttling beat frequencies. Closing record and title-track ‘Radius’ then takes you down its winding, stair-like beat patterns. So once again, it’s time to get with the Program. One which continues to bring forward new acts who are maintaining the label's fresh material.

Paying homage to the EP's which still stand as a vital part of the Ram discography, the label is about to reveal the third part of the ‘Ram Rave’ EP series. After launching the succession of releases in 2019, providing a package for both DJs and fans alike, Ram pulls together a collection of cuts which has signalled for the dancefloor orientated artists within their scope.

Delivering Prestige, Focusfire, Smooth & DC Breaks, Disaszt, Living Plastic, LQ, Ungru, NC-17, HeadRead, Psynchro & Whalespruce and more into the mix, welcoming artists both old and new, Ram enable fans to supplement clubbing culture at home. And they’re preparing them for the time their favourite spaces open their doors once more.
