MBR428: Golden Hour - Malevo (Incl. Underspreche Reinterpretation)

We’re excited to have Golden Hour back after his debut, Estela, this time to arouse the
essence of ‘Malevo’. Named after the ephemeral occurrence between day and night, the
Argentinian-born DJ/Producer captures Malevo through a subtle straw-tinted filter, and
the results here are, ironically, sublime. Malevo is at the dark tragic side of love, and in
MBR428, he gleams in sinister glory.
Up first, the high-powered South Italian duo, Underspreche renders their iambic
nocturnal reinterpretation. Invigorated by Marika’s harrowing vocals, sang at the cusp of
lust, gripe and fury, this remix is sensuous. It is poetry strutting at afterdark, slowly
burning on an esoteric groove, thrusted against tantric soundscapes colored with
electro-mysticism, carnal resonance and percussive seduction.
Golden Hour’s original mix is verseless but eloquent in its acoustic rhetoric. Buoyantly
meandering the horizon beneath and above daylight, this 7:10 minute track exposes
Malevo’s libido and frailty, rhythmically tugging between his warring conscience and
instinct. Melancholic riffs and climactic percussion are fed into the corruption of
cimmerian synths. But it's Golden Hour, the timbre here is rosier, and palliative
drumming keeps Malevo afloat through his sonic redemption.

LA is the ESP Institute’s hometown. The label’s captain, Lovefingers, is a native Angeleno who has lived in 15 of its neighborhoods spanning decades. While the ESP Institute was born in 00’s New York City with an international cast of artists, the DNA of the label has always been infused with the wild sense of freedom and space that is LA. It breaks our hearts to see the city and its residents in such a difficult position today. Our home and label’s office were damaged, the grounds incinerated and fire/smoke damage right up and onto it’s walls, and although it is still uninhabitable, we consider ourselves unbelievably fortunate that the structure was spared, surviving among our many neighbors whose homes are reduced to ash. Both the Palisades and Eaton fires have left so many of our friends and family with nothing – we collectively mourn not only for their physical space, much of which is generational, but for mementos of family history, their sense of security and ability to function from a safe sense of “home.” The grief and tasks of recovery are uncharted and ongoing, the rebuilding is daunting, arduous and overwhelming, and everyday brings new challenges in the fires wake. This will take time. If there is any light that we see in this, it is the prevalent sense of community we are witnessing in real time.

This is the 15th year of ESP Institute and we had an idea for a compilation planned, but, given the circumstances and the immense needs of our city and fellow Angelenos, we have decided to expand this release to 3x its initial scope and commit all of its efforts and income to wildfire relief organizations. We have initially selected the following vetted non-profit charities: CalFund, MusiCares, GiveDirectly, Global Empowerment Mission, Canine Rescue Club and plan to manually top up funds from circulating GoFundMe spreadsheets for under-represented families, commencing with those in Altadena. We anticipate a bi-weekly dispersal of funds, given the urgent and evolving nature of community needs, but will re-assess this consistently as time passes.

ESP’s artists have generously allowed us to present their music for this compilation and our gratitude starts with them. It is our hope the following 90 tracks will bring you something you need, whether it be joy, catharsis, wonder or meditation.

Returning to the AEON imprint for his second release this year, Denis Horvat is fast becoming one of the underground’s most hotly tipped artists. Steyoyoke mainstay BLANCAh returns with a four track EP entitled ‘Osso’. Hypnotic and dreamy, percussive and menacing, ‘Osso’ is bound to hit home in clubs around the world.

It is not an album format, but far more than merely an EP. “Picture:” is various dancefloor-oriented facettes of one producer, shaping the imagery that ultimately results in the listeners mind.

youANDme has been pumping out genre-defining and genre-defying electronic dance music for over 10 years and has earned his reputation as top class producer and DJ. The Berlin resident returns to Poker Flat with a superb EP - Traveller - a collaboration with close friend and peer Tim Toh.

Raised in Southern Germany, now residing in Berlin, Tim Toh gained a reputation as exceptional DJ and vinyl enthusiast. His skills first came to the attention of Soulphiction and led to a series of releases on Philpot, followed by outings on labels like Ornaments, Freerange, Mild Pitch and many more.

The results of the collaborations are particularly engaging - four tracks of deep n' baked house music around the theme of movement. 'Voyager' starts the journey fittingly using the Moog Voyager synth as a starting point and building a driving, string-laden track, topped off with Lisa Toh's (Tim's sister) whispered vocals.

Next up comes 'Traveller', which boasts a fantastic 'Mastermix remix' from the Norwegian disco don Prins Thomas - a typically spaced out, dubby groove emerges taking all three original tracks of the EP into orbit at once.

'Passport' is another deep roller - smoked out beats are joined by a thick, subby bass and house organ chords that remind of classic Carl Craig or Theo Parrish moments.

'Excursions' winds up the EP, a subtle and emotional groover that eventually breaks down into the strings that begin the EP- a perfect trip.

LL1220 is here, an overdue first release in 2019. 2019 is also about celebrating 5 years of Lossless. For the occasion we’ve decided to return to the dancefloors with the 3rd installment of our Outbound series. Outbound.3 again is a collection of exclusives by the labels core artists, spiced up with some hot additional contributions from befriended artists. 
This 2x12“ beautifully showcases a bit of our musical universe.

Neil Flynn is kicking things off with his track „Trá“. This deep, percussive affair showing off Neil’s trademark touch once again - celtic trippiness that sucks you in immediately. Then we move „8 Floors Up“ - testament of some fruitful studio sessions held by label boss Mathias Schober and the South African duo Atelier - formed by Jaś Miszewski and Alexander Inggs - in the headhoncho’s Berlin studio. It’s a wonderful song, perfectly balanced between underground electronica and pop music only in the best sense of course.
 
Flip record one and put the needle on it’s our dear friend Ian Pooley delivering the goods with „Durmitor“ – a truly epic and future-meets-past kinda piece, sitting on a rock solid and bottom heavy groove. This track took our hearts by storm. We also felt a strong urge representing with a new SBTH track and so we have the deep and percussive „Planet Greg“ next up – one (of many) musical perspectives we have on modern, afro inspired house music with a little leftfield twist. 
 
Side C we have Frankey & Sandrino with „Kuma“ – a funky melodic lick, building and building on a warm, clean yet very effective groove. This one’s taking you away and when the synth solo hits, there’s no way back. Moving onwards Love Over Entropy serves a tasty as always „Lemon Pie Type Vibe“ – a simply beautiful and airy track build around a broken beat. We consider this as a very special birthday cake. Have a slice!
 
Side D introduces new talent Hadiid who’s representing from the island of Borneo in Malaysia. Rudi’s view on electronic music is perfectly merging his cultural roots in South East Asia with the ability to create cutting edge dancefloor weapons. „Rebelwave“ is just the perfect proof. Finishing off the release in style is our Anthony Georges Patrice. The frenchman who set things off for us with his now classic „Parallel Romance“ five years ago, is showcasing a different side with „CTAFY“. This bouncy breakbeat with airy synth textures and delayed percussion lines also highlights Anthony’s strong development as an artist. Wait for the bassline drop!
 
Looking back on five years of Lossless we feel extremely excited that nearly all of the artists who release with us to date are part of this new Outbound.3 compilation. Thanks to all artists and everyone who supported our Lossless journey so far. It feels as if we’ve only started yesterday so there’s more to come.
