Aladin's is famous for the tasty food, and  for being one of the orginal curry houses on London's Brick Lane, they've had the same chef for 25 years. HRH Prince Charles visited in the 1980s and was interviewed on LBC news. The resturant had only one old cassette tape of the interview which they would sometimes play if you asked really really nicely because it was weaing out (the menu used to state you could request it played). ‘Sonification of You’ aims to make this data flow ‘visible’ to those people carrying active devices. The equipment will passively scan the various radio spectrum frequencies used by mobile phone devices, Bluetooth, WiFi networks, and others used by mobile devices, within a given place. The data information then represented by assigned audio sounds that will indicate activity, distance, and strength of signals.
Drawing on methods for monitoring large computer networks, the result is to create a background ‘sound’ for a space that is representational of the people, and their devices, present.

Taking the London Underground Journey Planner - an established and well known signifier of London - a navigation aid for millions of visitors and residents, I set out to discover, visit and see the whole of London.

The whole journey was recorded with microphones disguised as headphones. The binaural recordings comprise 60 hours of real-time audio of my visit to every Underground station on the plan. This plays back via a computer program which is itself selecting a continuous journey at each station with line interchanges. Presented with an accompanying screen displaying the colour demarcating the current line being traveled.

The computer is selecting a possible and continuous journey across and around London on the Underground transit system, playing back in the same time scale as the journey takes. The journey does not end.

The audio was recording using stereo microphones disguised as personal headphones creating a binaural recording.

Callanan’s work, Wars During My Lifetime, is a newspaper listing that features in the new exhibition Catalyst: Contemporary Art and War. It is a fascinating – and rapidly expanding – document that makes no comment but brings the list to our attention.
