An orchestral suite comprising four orchestral pieces that describe the four temperate seasons of the year. The project title is a nod to the cyclical nature of the seasons. The words below acted as a catalyst for the music.

Spring

The waiting is over. The Winter chill recedes and there is a tacit acceptance to the demands of birth and rebirth. A sign of fresh green poking through the ground is a welcome sight, a simple signal that all will be well.

Very quickly, in a sudden rush, there is life in the hedgerows and the sound of birds heralding a new season. One of life and growth and warmer days and rainy times, but overall a feeling of hope.

You have longed for this moment, a chance to put away your Winter clothes and feel the sun upon your face again. The riot of change will continue as the life-giving sun takes longer marches through the sky.

Spring of all seasons is a time to revel in simply feeling alive.

Summer

The days grow longer, the nights shorter, as the golden ball we call the sun parades in all it's glory. This is a time for living life to the full, a time of happiness, a time of pleasure and excess.

At the solstice, some people still give thanks to the life giving orb upon which we all depend. For we know this moment cannot last, the majesty will fade, the warmth will falter, the party will end.

With threadbare days and darker nights the proud display of Summer flowers starts to fade. The heat can be oppressive, at times there is a chill in the air and Nature herself seems finally quiescent.

We will carry those memories of days on the beach or at the park in our hearts forever. Those days of fun.

Autumn

The majesty of Summer has now faded. Leaves, once so green, now a myriad of fading colours as Mother Nature withdraws her life-giving hand.

The weather is changing too. Strong winds and blustery days jostle with times of calm reflection, as you take a little wander through the woods.

The squirrels are busy, as are the birds, as some prepare for darker times whilst others set forth on their migrant flights.

For nature knows, whilst man often forgets, that change is in the air.

Winter

As you travel deep into the heart of Winter,life slowly withdraws for a time. Not defeated, just resting for a while. New life will be reborn as the nights get shorter after the solstice.

But for now, you walk out into it's heart and reflect on the austere beauty this season brings. Water frozen over and castles made of ice. A fellow traveller hunched against the cold nods as you walk by.

The magic of Christmas quickly fades into the chill of the New Year. A time of renewal and vows of friendship and peace.

Nature is holding it's breath, ready to be be reborn with the light of the sun.

COMING BACK FOR MORE

This was an unexpected piece to round off another year after the acquisition of the wonderful VSL YMIR children's choir library. Well what can you do except compose a piece using it ;-)

Given the time of year a seasonal piece made sense and once I had a title then I was away. I also took the opportunity to practice orchestral wooshes (they are a thing). The ones in this piece comprise a cymbal roll, a timpani roll and a harp gliss.  

Many of the instruments employed here like glockenspiel and tubular bells are popular in this type of music and obviously sleigh bells make an appearance. I took the liberty of quoting 'Deck the Halls' in some places too.

I wanted a dream sequence in the middle of the piece which is mainly choir and alto flute, although the glockenspiel and percussion makes an appearance. It acts as a nice contrast to the general festive sleigh ride feel.

"As I sometimes think, my lyrics are manifesting, i really felt like we should create a very peaceful song.
It is a sign against war, we could all live in peace with each other and mother earth."
It turned out very elvish, celtic, deep and a bit like from the shire.
The title "Fae-lorn" means haven of soul. So that everybody can find an embrace and a shelter in it.
It is a song for peace hope carry on a peaceful shelter but also about love, healing, coming home, freedom and dreams of the shire.
Everything we need atm.

I noticed the original upload tempo was a bit fast. I've now re-uploaded with a more ponderous version, especially for the band sections. It sounds better to my ears now, more what I intended. I was a few bpm too fast. :-)

A relatively short piece of music to support an upcoming Winter Fun themed Vector Owl short animation.  I wanted two contrasting styles of music in this piece to give more animation possibilities. 

So I went for the sound of a Tyrolean band in one section and a more dreamy, string-based section with a choral element. Hopefully the whole piece will invoke the sense of fun and Winter wonder.

Vector Owl is a cheeky magical owl who gets up to various antics in the forest he calls home. Quite often, he just wants to have a quiet snooze but pesky creatures keep disturbing him.

Thankfully, with his understanding of the power of vector magic, he can conjure up solutions to these annoyances and get back to having a well earned rest.

Background

This project began with a 10 second piece of music and a very simple 2D animation of a little character called Vector Owl.

The music was expanded into a full theme tune, a brand new redesigned Vector Owl emerged and a change of animation software resulted in what you see here. Whilst familiar with creating music, animation is a completely new world to me and I'm still learning as I go.

All the graphic elements are vector-based, using a combination of Serif Affinity software for graphical development and various open-source packages for animation and video editing, with the original music created in Cubase Pro.

The idea of a Winter Fun Short for Vector Owl seemed a good idea after doing a Halloween-based one. The idea of two distinct types of music in the track gives possibilities for more varied animation and I'm hoping to add a few extra characters to the Forest for this one. 

When completed, the Winter Fun short link will be posted here, but for now it can be enjoyed purely as a very short piece of orchestral incidental music. :-)
