Grocer is a band that demands context and attention: listen to just one song or wander away mid-set to smoke a cigarette, and you’ll completely miss what they’re about. Featuring three distinct vocalists/lyricists, Grocer is a band that grooves, but never quite settles; a group that loves a good melody, yet remains moments away from chaos. Recently described as “if The Pixies wrote a musical”, their on-stage chemistry is undeniable whether ripping through an Audiotree session or playing in their home city of Philadelphia.

Their forthcoming sophomore album, Numbers Game, is full of these tricks, nods, and winks as the band rearranges the puzzle pieces of 90s-influenced rock and dissonant pop into something utterly their own. Originally imagined as a four song EP, Numbers Game came about in two quick bursts: The first when the quartet isolated themselves in rural Georgia in January 2021 to focus on writing and escaping the pandemic, and the second immediately following an overwhelming six-week national tour the summer of that year.

Frequently, the songs find Grocer attempting to escape the turmoil of the outside world by turning inward, only to find struggles existing just as intensely within themselves: scattered throughout are allusions to technology dependencies, social complacencies, and overall realizations that they may not be the angels they presumed they were. Recorded quickly in hopes of mirroring the unhinged nature of Grocer’s live performances, Numbers Game is a cathartic, immersive dive into a band that refuses to stop searching.

Philadelphia art-rockers Pine Barons announce their new Fishmans cover album I LOVE FISH by sharing the music video for cover track "ナイトクルージング (Night Cruising)". Fishmans is known for their unique psychedelic sound with rocksteady basslines and the distinctive vocals of the late lead singer Shinji Sato.

Lead vocalist Keith Abrams says "ナイトクルージング (Night Cruising) was one of the first songs that came together for this record early on in the process, and was one of the easier songs to translate into English. It was a popular song for Fishmans when it first came out, and I wanted to stay true to its dreaminess and to have it build upon itself and crescendo into a blissful end.”

"For this video, we tried to embody the brightness and liveliness that was our discovery of Fishmans. Looking back on their music has truly helped us look forward. It sparked a flame and revitalized a forgotten feeling we’ve all had in ourselves - a yearning curiosity and genuine awe. It rekindled our love and appreciation for music, creatively and objectively." says Alex Beebe, keyboardist and director of the music video. 

As fans of Fishmans, Pine Barons took great care to replicate and honor the intricate details that went into the original record, in addition to adding their own meticulous spin. For example, on legendary 30 minute romp "Long Season," the band ran through a field of snow geese with 3 different samplers for a transition. The band paints a picture of recording that track, describing: "we built custom wind chimes out of glockenspiel tone bars, bells, forks and knives which were all hanging from the rim of a bike tire which hung from the ceiling. Two mics coming out the ears of a mannequin head which was placed beneath the spinning wind chimes were used to record it for a binaural effect."

Blue Canopy - Stranger At The Door (ft. Misty Boyce)

Originally a working title representing the first letters of the band members’ names (Sean, Cory, Alec, Brandon), S.C.A.B. is an acronym with a shifting meaning – its phonetic double acting as a metaphor for protection and healing for a group that’s always been there for one another.

Following the release of the band’s debut album, 2019’s Beauty & Balance, COVID-19 put the brakes on the Brooklyn-based band’s burgeoning career. Not content with sitting still, the band decided to travel down to Georgia to record their sophomore, self-titled LP (S.C.A.B.), which they engineered and produced themselves. (side note: Brandon, the letter "B" in S.C.A.B., does play on this record, but has since left the group to focus on solo work under the name Hayfitz). Having distance from their beloved city during this unprecedented, tragic time helped them hone a sound that is even more distinctly New York.

Frontman Sean Camargo, whose parents immigrated from Ecuador and Bolivia as teenagers, was born in Elmhurst, Queens. His lyrics are colored with nostalgic memories of 90s Bushwick, where his grandparents later settled, alongside sardonic observations of the contemporary city where he landed again after stops in Maryland and Massachusetts. Each song on S.C.A.B. contains snapshots of New York moments that feel hazy with nostalgia, yet are the result of being present through transformational circumstances, no matter how seemingly small. As a self-titled effort, it solidifies the band’s mastery of balancing raucous, distorted guitars with glimmering spoken word passages and a pop-infused melodic confidence.

The angular guitar passages in lead single “Tuesday” conjure up trains skidding across deteriorated subway platforms, as Camargo declares he's "trying to let go of everyone I’ve ever loved," reflecting a relatable disillusionment with trying to form meaningful connections, and searching aimlessly for something worthwhile. Thematically, S.C.A.B. covers an array of topics ranging from grief (“Small Talk”), as Camargo describes bonding with another band member over the loss of a parent, to infatuation with a partner you know is ultimately bad for you (“Why Do I Dream Of You”).

S.C.A.B. is a result of four musicians, a tight-knit group, best friends: the kind of rare conditions that allow for such raw, emotionally-charged music. When the members of a band are this close, able to protect each other from the world outside it, they are a force to be reckoned with. As Frank Sinatra famously sang about the city, “Green beams of steel, making me feel, like I’m home again”. S.C.A.B. embodies that sentiment and evokes the intangible magic that is New York City.

This homage to Motown plays like a prom theme in slow motion. Set against the backdrop of a hazy dance floor, Kerry Charles recalls a fleeting moment of recognition and infatuation on the eve of 2016. But some things just aren't meant to be…

Featuring Dustin Kaufman (of St. Lucia) on drums, and a ripper of a solo from preeminent saxophonist Max Cudworth, Charles and co will lull you into a daydream of synthesizers and simpler times. 

An earlier version of The One I Know was released in 2016 on the net label RareMP3s following a legendary New Years party in Philadelphia hosted by Naeem Juwan (Startisha / Spank Rock). That original version is featured as b-side to this single.

Blurring the lines between caricature and confessional, Kerry Charles isn't quite certain where his act ends and reality begins. Sardonic, yet sincere, abject but personal and indisputably groovy, Charles's timeless pop recordings are as enigmatic as their author.

Drawing influence from the likes of Prince, Hall and Oates and Steely Dan, Charles's obsessively produced tracks land somewhere between laid-back synth pop, smooth dad rock and seductive R&B.

The New Jersey-based songwriter and producer pairs his intimate falsetto with a lush palette of synthesizers and the inimitable sax stylings of Max Cudworth to produce a sound that longs for a time of polyester and purple rain.

Supported by an outstanding lineup of musicians (including Dustin Kaufman of St. Lucia), Charles and Cudworth spin a sensual yarn that will have you reaching to dim the lights and uncork that second bottle of malbec.

With his debut LP slated for early next year and even more in the works, Kerry Charles is just getting started.

‘Chop Shop’ was recorded in a single improvisational take and embodies a scattered, frenetic energy. Short sound snippets were randomly arranged and layered to create evolving melodic and rhythmic phrases that bounce around the listener. The video by Giselle Angeles compliments the track by placing the music inside of various distinct 3-D visual environments that shift and pulse in time. The organic virtual landscapes add a human component and juxtaposition to the synthetic sounding musical ideas.”

Wenner’s experimental sound design in large-scale public performance spaces centres around improvised sample playback manipulation using a modular system and field recordings.

Wenner's innovative method involves the manipulation of various sampled content through his modular rig during improvisational jam sessions. From these sessions, he masterfully edited and weaved together a seamless and immersive sonic journey, encapsulating the freeform and exploratory spirit that defines his latest LP, "Age of Execution," set to be released on November 10, 2023.

Today's premiere, "Strange Brew," was crafted from spontaneous jam sessions involving playback and manipulation of an eclectic range of sampled content, all integrated into his modular rig. "Strange Brew" reflects the artistic freedom and exploration that permeates his forthcoming album, "Age of Execution."
