It was a dusty, hot, summer day ... when I first saw her walking toward me.    She was bruised and confused; she was wearing plastic shoes; said her mother made her dress this way.   

 Her lunch-box was old and empty; it had been out of style for years.  The cool kids enjoyed making fun of it. So she learned to smile through tears.   

 And I wish you would have stayed around my friend; it got much better you know.   We were kids what did we have? All we could do was grow.    

She told her mother about a new dress; because she had to wear the same one every day. Her father shouts he's a "working man," while her mother had nothing to say.    

So she started her own lemonade stand, and she sat with the sun in her eyes. Her pencil for order was ready to go -- looking on while the neighbors walked by.  

  Christmas would come to a cold house; nothing was the gift that she got.  She struggled to smile in an old stocking cap and said "presents are not what I want."    

And I wish you would have stayed around my friend; it got much better you know.   We were kids what did we have? All we could do was grow.  

  And I still think of you and me.  Only a memory.  I wish you were here.    

It was a gray and rainy spring day, when I last saw here walking away.    She was crying with the sky -- waving goodbye and saying "this time I'm going to stay."  

  And the words "I love you daddy" are still written on his coffee mug.  And I wonder after all of this time, is there anything, anyone, could have done.   

And I wish you would have stayed around my friend; it got much better you know.   We were kids what did we have? All we could do was grow.
