"If someone from Detroit wins, it's another win for Detroit." The duo discuss their longtime roots in the Motor City and how their work has evolved after more than 30 years in the game.

To commemorate August 8th, we're featuring an interview with the Detroit duo AUX88. Tommy Hamilton—AKA TOMTOM—and William “BJ” Smith—AKA POSATRONIX—are pioneers celebrating 35 years in the music industry, known for their work combining elements of ghetto tech, Kraftwerk-indebted techno and Miami bass. Their sound has remained consistent throughout the decades, and their influence on club music extends far and deep.

In this Exchange, RA editor Nyshka Chandran interviews the duo live from Detroit earlier this year, where they discuss their trajectory in the scene. They started out playing at local businesses, they recall—flower shops, coffee shops, cabarets and strip clubs—sometimes to no more than three people. They also unpack their creative setup and why their music has and always will be indebted to futurism and sci-fi. The duo turn their attention to the present. AUX 88 just released an EP called ALPHA WAVES and are starting a new label that will help champion local artists. In their words: "If someone from Detroit wins, it's another win for Detroit." I’m really happy to share the next Deep Mind Music today, from my friend Adam Pits. A calming and serene entry, listening to this mix feels like floating on your back in a cool lake on a hot day. A quenching refreshment for a frazzled mind 🩵

The mix wanders gently through slowly morphing landscapes. The soft twitter of birdsong brings us to a dusk dappled forest, warm drones coaxing us further inwards in a lackadaisical swirl. Toward the end of the mix we are uplifted by luminescent arpeggios which draw rainbow trails through the sky above 🍃☀️🌿

I sense in Adam’s selections and musical approach a shared sensitivity to the innate emotive undertones of music, as well as sounds which have an inherent depth and vitality to them. I hope you enjoy listening to this meditative mix as much as I have 🪶

Copenhagen’s Echocord label returns this September with the release of the ‘Invincible Nature’ EP by Altone, featuring remixes from Thomas Fehlmann and Another Channel. Altone, the alias of Tokyo-based Yuki Takasaki, is a prominent figure in the Japanese dub techno scene, having released music on labels such as Greyscale, Lempuyang, Vuo and Æ Recordings. His unique take on dub techno has garnered international recognition within the underground scene. Now, he joins the esteemed Echocord label, a significant force in dub techno for over two decades, led by Kenneth Christiansen.

Today’s premiere features a laid-back, dub-infused remix by the legendary Swiss producer and composer Thomas Fehlmann, known for his work with The Orb and releases on labels like Kompakt, R&S, Tresor and Apollo to name a few. The remix is characterized by rich sub-bass, glitchy synth modulations that keep morphing throughout the track, and soft dub stabs that add a distinctive touch.
The track premieres today on Delayed, with the official release scheduled for September 6th.

MCMLXXXV (@thetruemcmlxxxv) is a co-founder and resident at Berlin's celebrated queer party Herrensauna. Though it has gone from being a local underground favourite to a globe-travelling brand, it always remains true to its mission of empowering people though music and community. The soundtrack is hard and dark and comes from across the electro, techno, EBM and industrial spectrum but for every bit of grit, there is always a hint of seduction. MCMLXXXV was a real highlight when he closed down Dekmantel Festival '22 at the UFO stage with his fellow residents so we're delighted to welcome him back to the podcast series.

And he doesn't disappoint across a high-octane hour. The slick selections are in a rush to get you moving and once you start you won't be able to stop. The rhythms are elastic but bumping with earth-quaking bass down low and everything from tribal percussion to liquid synths via sleazy vocals up top. It's a perfect display of MCMLXXXV's ability to blend the physical with the sensual into colourful and contemporary soundtracks that really bang.
