Originally composed and recorded in the USA by the arch-rockabilly guitarist Eddie Cochran in 1958.  Simple Minds sang it 30 years later in June, 1988 for Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Concert at Wembley Stadium, UK .  They were joined by Johnny Marr (of the then 'The Smiths) on Lead Guitar.  24 years later the world has moved on but some 'scratchy sounds' live on.  With the addition of an echoplexed Thinline Telecaster, a phased Acoustic Guitar, Baritione Ukulele and Bass were all added to create that live and aurally chaotic sound. "...Oh-oh-oooo!" :-R
