PROSPEKT PODKAST #057 | SWARM INTELLIGENCE [47] 

We are very happy to welcome one of our favourite Producers, Live Act, DJs and Influences onto the podcast series with 80 minutes of tense atmospherics, uncompromising levels of distortion and stark, astute beats constitute a distinctive sound that Simon Hayes has been honing for more than a decade under his Swarm Intelligence guise.

Visceral, densely textured, and intricately programmed, Swarm Intelligence’s distinctive sound comes from almost a decade of releases, spanning multiple genres and tempos. His non-conformist approach to music has earned him a solid reputation worldwide.

Born in Dublin, Simon Hayes found a home in the city’s thriving bass and techno scene in the early 2000s. He became a regular attendee at nights run by the likes of Kaboogie and Electric City, and later went on to DJ and host events.

A student of computer and electronic engineering, he later focussed his studies on artificial intelligence and began to apply learned concepts to music. He graduated in 2009 and moved to Berlin shortly thereafter, where he founded his Swarm Intelligence project. Initially intended as an antidote to the city’s then monotone four-to-the-floor offerings, his sound was raw, high tempo and distortion-laden, and better suited to illegal raves and squat parties.

It was this abrasive tone that led him to the doors of the seminal Ad Noiseam label, with whom he went on to release two rhythmic noise albums: “Faction” (2014) and “Rust” (2015). He also began touring extensively, including an AV performance at the infamous Maschinenfest. His hefty live sets later drew the attention of the Boiler Room crew, who invited him to perform at a Berlin edition of their show at the end of 2015.

Drawn to the emerging bleak and brutalist techno sound at the time, Hayes returned to his roots. His debut EP “The Lighthouse” (2016) on the then up-and-coming label Voitax was widely supported on floors across the continent. This was followed by releases on Instruments of Discipline (“Home Recordings”, 2017) and Earwiggle (“Flatlands”, 2017).

Propelled by this momentum, he went on to release his widely-acclaimed fourth album. “Against the Dying Light” (2018), released on Voitax, was written as a reaction to the shift in global politics towards fear and oppression. "If Industrial Techno is a sewer – flowing under the infrastructure of club culture, always there, hardly changing – then this is a horrific eruption from those subterranean depths, impossible to ignore or forget once exposed to it" – The Wire. Swarm Intelligence debuted this album during a memorable live set on Berghain’s Säule floor, and proceeded to tour across Europe.

2019 saw Hayes return to his rave beginnings with a drum-machine focussed EP on New York Trax Imports, as well as a cutting-edge technoid release on the renowned 47 label. His “Ultraware” EP (2020) on Voitax utilized experimental DSP and modular synthesis to reimagine classic rave foundations for dancefloors of the future.

Up next, Hayes returns to 47 – "47026 sees straight-up slammers and bass-heavy broken grinders collide, tied together with the high-grade sound design we've come to expect from Swarm Intelligence."

Kareem, Founder of Zhark Recordings Berlin, has been presenting heavy armoured track material since the year 96 challenging the auditory, pushing them deep into the abyss.
His definition of the Zharkesthetic lies in conveying a claustrophobic state > an atmosphere of threatening sound architecture constantly challenging the innocuous conventions of the electronic DANCE MEDIUM.

His portfolio ranges from dozens of vinyl releases on Zhark, to release collaborations with industrial techno producers such as Ancient Methods or Dave Foster aka HUREN. 
Kareem has furthermore contributed to projects such as Amélie Ravalec`s Techno Documentary Paris/Berlin 20 years of underground Techno, Perc`s 10 year anniversary compilation or Boomkat`s Connor Thomas conceptional vinyl series The Death of Rave. 

Kareem has played major venue such as Berghain, Tresor or Katharis (Amsterdam) and has been transmitting his dark vision of Techno both as a DJ and in intense long enduring  Live Set sessions.

Øperat, an experimental industrial project born by the Italian duo in 2013. Always passionate about electronic music, they approached the world of live and production right away. Suggesting a completely modular set up. Their sound is characterized by dark environments with dynamic bass lines and rhythms, aggressive and sharp sounds. After several years spent in a studio they had the opportunity to play live shows at one of the main clubs in the area"Hyper" (VI). In which they had several opportunities to perform with international artists. Last year they recorded some DJ sets for Sehnsucht Kollektiv, The Slave, Untreated, Vumantra, M.powerhouse and Brutal Forms.In February 2019 they have their first release in a various artist on Kloster recordings and December 2020 Templer (Area Z). 

Øperat is a strong and solid project in continuous evolution created by two old childhood friends.

Ombrar is a French and British young producer based in Wiltshire, England formed as a Sound engineer.
He is driven by sound even more than music itself which has shaped a lot the way he produces music. Always on the move, his style became harder over the years, continuing his path towards a more violent, rough and unique sound.
Passionate by all the different sound techniques and tools, he keeps experimenting all the time, and his interest for guitars and field recordings, gives to his music a certain texture that is easily identified.
His ever increasing experience in the sound domain has pushed him to develop a live on his modular system.
He also co-founded his own record label “Black Silhouette Records” with his brother back in 2017.
Deeply inspired by the eeriness and unknown of this world, he is always searching for atmospheres that will define his path.

Wraz z rozwojem i upływem czasu jego styl nabiera surowości , kontynuując swoją drogę w kierunku bardziej brutalnego, szorstkiego i niepowtarzalnego brzmienia. Pasjonuje się różnymi technikami i narzędziami dźwiękowymi,  cały czas eksperymentując, a jego zainteresowanie gitarami i nagraniami terenowymi nadaje jego muzyce dodatkową teksturę, którą łatwo zidentyfikować. Jego stale rosnące doświadczenie w dziedzinie dźwięku skłoniło go do opracowania setów live za pomocą systemów modularnych. 
Wraz z bratem założył  w 2017 roku własną wytwórnię płytową „Black Silhouette Records” . Głęboko zainspirowany niesamowitością i niewiadomą tego świata, zawsze szuka klimatu który określi jego ścieżkę.

P RISCO's dangerously fast style has proliferated online with mixes for Voight Kampff, Pure Hate, to name a few, as well as holding down a residency at 1020 Radio in Bristol and Aaja Music in South East London - an inner journey to research and showcase dissonant harmonies of drones and resonances, low frequency rumbles
and machines noises ranging from Ambient to avant garde sounds ending up on a more aggressive note,In August 2020, P. RISCO launched his own label Chronicles Records to provide a truly sensational visual and sound
sensory experience - focusing on hard and fast techno with a touch of industrial rave and acid shade.

Years of Denial [Pinkman / Veyl, UK]

Years of Denial is the alter-face of French musician / DJ / producer Jerome Tcherneyan and Czech performance artist / DJ / producer Barkosina Hanusova. With the use of hardware combined with vocals and a plethora of dub devices, YOD are re-visiting the dark corner of Post Punk, Industrial music movement and Rave culture. 

Their live Electro performances fuse repetitive beats and pulsating arpeggios with heavy electronics and spacey psychedelic sonic treatment.
Barkosina’s voice echoes and oscillates against snares, profound and wounded at once. Her dark romanticism and narrative poetry take us to unknown yet familiar places. The duet operate on the dance floor without anesthetic creating an excursive electrifying shady atmosphere.

Both influenced by Isolationism, they also perform improvised cinematic Ambient sets with the use of modular synths and processed vocals. They draw upon the darker and profound stimulus of experimental music, creating an immersive and dramatic imaginative space.
