Groundwerk Recordings is a label driven by ART>EGO. Groundwerk's sound reflects the moody depth of an urban landscape existing between ocean and forest. From bright outgoing summer days to dark and heavy winter nights, our releases aim to tell the story of the four seasons experienced in our west coast city. 
Music featured on Groundwerk Recordings has sprouted from grassroots electronic music community initiatives in Vancouver, Canada. The most predominant of these initiatives is the Groundwerk Listening Party, a monthly social meet-up for electronic music enthusiasts to connect and collaborate. With these events gaining momentum, Groundwerk Recordings is born, ready to present its community to the world.
We launch with an EP from Diana Boss, a production duo that has been with us since Groundwerk Listening Party 001. 
The single West Coast, featuring lyrics and vocals from Vancouver artist Elle Wolf, soars over the coastline and with guitar arpeggios and a hint of synth driven-hardness. 
The B-side Legacy is a sassy bassline driven stomper with a wide-open drop.
Karsten Sollors' West Coast remix takes the single deeper and later into the party, delivering a lower groove that sits well in a tech-house set.

What inspired you while creating this mix?

The inspiration I had in creating this mix was actually an idea I’d had for some time. It was about doing a mix of all original productions or remixes I’d been asked to do for other artists. It was a turning point for me, some type of shedding of skin. I felt like I needed to do this in order to take the next step for myself as an artist.

Who were your strongest influences? 

As an artist, anyone who is taking the time to explore and who is pushing their craft to the boundaries. Like Aphex Twin, Nine Inch Nails, Locust, At The Drive In. They are artists I aspire to emulate. I think where they come from is all very different, their sound is obviously very different, but their passion to what they do is inescapable.

In recent times, how do you think your sound has changed or evolved? 

My sound has evolved. For me, it’ll always be new concepts and new ways to look at music and art in general that excite and push me. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t inspired by all the amazing music out there, but I try to find inspiration in things that aren’t music related.

Is there anything you would like your listeners to know about you or the music itself? 

With this mix, there's a variety of vibes and styles. Pummelling & rhythmic, and then melodic and at times mysterious. It shows the different vibes that I like to explore. Also, there's a percentage of these songs that are exclusive to this mix and will not be heard anywhere else. 

Adding to his long list of collaborations, The GOAT has recently worked with such artists as, Kalibo, Diana Boss, Rusty Meeks, and Rennie Foster (just to name a few). This underground powerhouse has also released music on labels like Substation Recordings, TECHNO.BLACK, and Flat Belly White.

Are there any future projects you would like to shine the light on? 

I had the pleasure of working on a remix for the very incredible Kloves which came out on march 15th on Re:Define Records.  I’ve got a few more remixes coming out in the coming months as well and 2 EP’s . Im working on some collaborations that I’m very excited about with my techno brother Joel West and one with the the very talented Black Vise. Lately I’ve been really enjoying remixing other artists. That instantly gets me excited. I love to try to solve the puzzle of how to honour them by being me. 

This evolving thrash drummer, turned DJ Producer, has definitely developed a sound that is intrinsically his. Defying genre norms, and carving his own path, we bring you The GOAT.

Groundwerk Mix Series 005: The GOAT

It's time . . . to techno.
Vancouver artist The GOAT has releases and remixes on Substation Recordings, Flat Belly White, Re: Define Records, Straight Up!, Major League, and Techno.Black. He joins us with three heavy, diverse cuts that reveal his depth of tone, while maintaining his percussive hook signature and a dusty crunch throughout. 
Above It All is a peak-time go tune, with drums as driving as the verbed-out stabs are dramatic.
Hyperevolution is a left-field banger with a special story: sampled in the breakdown are the ultrasound heartbeats of The GOAT's (at the time) not-yet-born twins. We are happy to report they are now already joining him in the studio and twisting knobs at less than a year old.
Finally we slow down and get a little slinky with In a Haze, the first track signed for this EP. Almost deep house, but with a minimal techno aesthetic, carried by The GOAT's signature melodies made from percussive elements.

Groundwerk Recordings label head Joel West debuts with a moody and musical 120bpm deep-tech single, supported by remixes from Iain Howie (Rhombus, SOSO, Be Free Recordings, East Van Digital) and The GOAT (Groundwerk Recordings, Techno.Black, Substation Recordings, Flat Belly White, Re: Define Records, Straight Up!, Major League).
Joel West’s original hits heavy with driving percussion and moody stabs, delivers beauty with the entrance of the Rhodes & organ call-and-answer, and culminates in a hauntingly powerful groove after the drop. 
Iain Howie’s highly textured remix takes us to a deep house festival stage in the open air, with a breakdown and drop at once patient, gigantic, and maturely delivered. Iain Howie is one to watch. 
The GOAT’s remix picks up the tempo and is made for the 2 minute blends of the long set techno DJ. He uses atmospherics and stabs to create valley-like anticipation that resolves via a breakdown that is the musical equivalent of the sun breaking through dark clouds.

These events are informal affairs, not simply for producers, but anyone who enjoys and appreciates local music.
