Here's our recording from @valentin-hauptmann and me at this years lovely Zmar Festival and we're super happy to finally share it with you. Thanks to all these fantastic creatures who shared this memorable saturday afternoon with us. For the two of us it has been one of the best moments this year.

The sound might be a bit off due to the leveler, odd EQing, intense fun and a great Friday night. But we hope that after some editing it’s edible now!

I found an old iPod a couple of days ago and on top of a ton of old mixes and tracks I found this set I put together for the @balearicsocial crew up in Leeds in 2012. That's 13 years ago! I don't think this one's online anymore, so here it is once again, freshly transferred from the depths of arcane technology. 

It goes all over the place: Ambient, tribal, soul, downtempo, left-field, kosmiche, jazz and into very loose territory! I really enjoyed hearing these records again, and I hope you dig it too. Big shout to Andy Pye and all the Yorkshire Balearic ultras!

Q: How did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the result? 

I’ve been meditating a lot. Haha, no, honestly, my little girl loves to play with the levers on my sound card, so the recording part has become a bit more time-consuming and nerve-wracking. Other than that, it’s the usual. I have a box where I keep the new records I want to use. I start with those to see what direction they want to take me, and add a few older favorites where they might fit. 



Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

I have quite a few records here that I’ve found while traveling over the last few years. Some from my visits to Sweden and Denmark and four or five from our last visit to Argentina. The rest of the family was sick with the flu at the beginning of our time in Buenos Aires, so I had more time than expected to visit record stores in and around the city. Knowing where I found a record or who recommended it to me is always a nice memory, and it remains with most of my records even after 30 years. 



Q: How do you dig for old/new music/records?

Well, most of it is online these days, but I still love to go out diggin or swap with friends. These days I rarely have the time to go to record stores, flea markets or second-hand stores, but it’s all the more fun. Diggin used to be much more dependent on whether I found something nice or not, now I can just keep going for the fun of it. 



Q: One record that doesn’t want to leave your turntable lately?

I try not to play my favorite record(s) non-stop like I used to, but rather as a reward after a long day or when I need to cheer myself up. It’s usually hard for me to choose one, but lately it’s been “pursuit of color” I’d say. It took me more than fifteen years to find a copy and when I finally did, I had almost forgotten how much I loved it.  



Q: Music bonds people. Any djs/projects/etc.. you would like to shout out? 

Big up to all my friends here in Zürich: the hum‘ crew M&M, Oli, phantom island massiv Tobi, Ron, Lexx, my Kern buddies, Fabi for keeping it real and all the good laughs, Nick and the whole crew, Alex and Sacha and everyone involved, missing it, Buzz for never stopping, Synths of World for the good energy, much love, CocoFresco, looking forward. Hallooo Mix Series No.19 – Schoolbell

For this episode, just in time for spring, we have a very special guest mix from James Pogson who runs the fantastic labels Symphonical and Fantasy Love Records. With both these labels James rescues underrepresented timeless music from the tides of time. Check out the three volumes of the sweet soul comps The Key To Our Love to get a taste of the depth of his work. Unmissable stuff. Expanding on his archival practice James is releasing a series of filmic portraits featuring artists from these compilations. The first is screening in Soho, London on June 22nd, check out Symphonical on IG for more info. The mix James gave us a superlative gathering of impossibly rare independent soul 45s, enjoy!

Whether you’re floating free to antipodean ambience or toasting the sunset with a Baltic beauty, you can always count on Growing Bin to take you someplace new for a while. Swapping bucolic Poland for the buzz of the Big Apple, the Hamburg imprint reaches a magnificent seven in the company of synth-pop dreamer Shy Layers (JD Walsh to his mum) and his sublime self titled debut. Over the course of ten emotional pop serenades, the New York musician recalls lost days
sofa surfing to the lounge electronica of Air, Mellow and early Phoenix or the swooning lo-fi psychedelia of a pre-MD Simian.
Shy Layers welcomes us aboard with the shimmering pads and soothing soft synths of ‘Black & White’, a drifting soundtrack to a John Hughes-directed episode of ‘In The Night Garden’. From there we swerve into the wistful synth-pop of ‘Famous Faces’, locking into the rattling Tears For Fears groove while the West Coast guitar licks and vocoder vocals float off into the distance.
‘You Won’t Find Me’ shuffles through afro-tronic keyboard lines, Beta Band breakbeats and loose funk guitar before the sweltering ‘Stabilized Waves’ dips a toe in the Med, swaying gently to the fluid bass, acoustic strumming and cascading electric guitar. Swapping continents to close the A-side, ‘Too Far Out’ finds Walsh working highlife guitars and fuzzy sanza sequences into a piece of perfect off-kilter pop. The B-side begins in glitchy fashion with the flying hats and seesaw synths of ‘Holding It Back’, before ‘Playing The Game’ offers sprinklers over summer lawns, dub fx, jangling guitars and cooing vocals. The afrobeat influence shines through once again on the rhythmic ‘Bees & Bamboo’ before ‘SEG’ sees Shy Layers don Mario’s Red Wing cap for a chip-set safari through the bright blue sky. Playing us out with the same cinematic splendour with which we began, Walsh conjures a woozy, sun-dappled mood for the sumptuous ‘1977’. Fusing French pop, glistening Americana, 80s AOR and afrobeat into a hazy vision of balmy mornings, long evenings and lazy days, Shy Layers has served up the soundtrack to your summer.
