JPDL - Existential Records

South West’s JPDL is back with the release of his new EP, Existential Records. Since hooking up with Scope Music Management, JPDL’s success as a live performer, and in record, has gone from strength to strength. Recently supporting Four Owls at Drunken Masters to a sold out crowd and being named in the recent Wychwood Festival line up, JPDL is establishing himself as a stand-out performer in the world of UK hip hop and spoken word.

Now, we see the release of Existential Records, a six-track showcase featuring cuts produced by Contribe, Sketchster and Prozac. Opener Melodies of a Heatwave fits right in with the summery weather we’re having in the UK, and has the requisite hot vibe. JPDL’s flow is in full force here, as he bends his rhymes around Contribe’s beats. Mic D adds in additional words perfectly. Sit back and drift off as Existential Records begins. The same team bring you Red Eyes, a tribute to the herb and its creative possibilities. JP…’s style draws you into his worldview, where things might seem free and easy, but have layers of complexity and artistry.

Things step up on Opus, where the frenetic rhyme scheme bring to mind old skool names like Lewis Parker and First Down. Prozac’s beats are easy and relaxed, as JPDL goes in, explaining just what he is about. That’s the importance of standing out and doing your own thing, as he explains further on Sketchster’s Do What You Feel (Never Follow). Surrounded by jazzy samples and subtle drums, the MC makes a point for independence and solidarity.

Next up is Discs Get Spun, produced by Prozac, and featuring Moorish. It’s party night as JP...and Moorish let you know how they get down. Fun, funky and flowing, this is a fresh and different take on hip hop, complete with soul. Closer Tongue Tied rounds things out perfectly, with both JPDL and Mic D doing what they do best, guiding listeners through their creative process. Sketchster gives us a great scratch section to tie the track together.
