Gagaku is a form of ancient imperial Japanese music. The points of interest are its spectral and timbral diversity, instruments rich in overtones, difference in intonation/tuning system from western or popular Indian and rhythmic openness.
This composition is for an electric violin and modular synthesiser. Movement 1 explores the difference in tuning system, floating in the field of sonic trance
Movement 2 explores the spectral nature of Gagaku where the violin engages a personal technique I call barrage of notes, where notes are played in quick succession to generate and highlight quantities of overtones
Movement 3 explores the percussive and rhythmic nature of Gagaku
In the spirit of Gagaku, this composition builds several times only to result in anticlimactic releases
