Hook Recordings was a progressive trance label from Aberdeen, who, along with their sister labels Bellboy and UG, released a consistent line of excellent singles from around 1997 to the early 2000s. I think I probably have more 12” singles from Hook than I do from any other label (bar KLF Communications). I decided to put some of the best of them together in this mix.

Right, Hook.

Sunset Boulevard, aka The Boulie, was a nightclub in Clydebank, which ran from 1992 until it closed sometime in 2013. In its heyday it was one of the best dance music clubs in the country, attracting people from all over Scotland. It was often described as infamous, although I'm not sure why it wasn't just 'famous'. Whilst it didn't host loads of international names, its residents made sure each night of the weekend was filled with the best new dance music, Sunday nights in particular were legendary.

I spent many a night at the Boulie between 1995 and 2005. I never played there, but if I had, it might have sounded a little like this...

The term The Angels' Share usually refers to the whisky that evaporates from the cask whilst it's maturing. In this case, it's some records that I found whilst digitising others, that I had either forgotten about or which never got used as much as they should have. A couple of them were nice surprise finds that I don't know why they've gone unplayed for 20 odd years.... The ones that nearly got away.

There are a couple missing unfortunately, as they were either terrible quality pressings or the centre hole is off, making them impossible to mix properly....which is maybe why they were at the bottom of a pile of vinyl in the first place.

Black Rabbit [let’s call is Warehouse. Though if you want to know what it really was, Akufen’s first track in this mix will tell you] was the sister night to JD Twitch and JG Wilkes’ regular Optimo (Espacio) at the Sub Club. BRW ran in the early 2000s, irregularly taking over a venue, or abandoned building. The night was based a new sound, variously known as Glitch or Microhouse, pioneered by producers from Germany and particularly at the time by Canada’s Akufen. This is a collection of my favourite tracks that influenced, or were influenced by, that sound.

Trushmix presents Bristol's own Curly Waters. No stranger to the Trushmix series. This time Curly was on a visit in Berlin, and played a smashing set at DJ Sotofett's  Tresor x Wania night at Globus/Tresor!

Here a three hour set consisting of quality mostly house and techno music. As an opening set for an amazing night, Curly starts easy and gradually builds up a consistent strong vibe and energy. Some dubby sounds, US style, UK sounds, electro, hints of breakbeat, and some good shifts in tempo and groove. This is it!

Before returning to China, he co-ran Fault Ratio in San Francisco, a vessel that nurtured the local music community and offered a home to many artists along the way. Sailing back across the Pacific, he now channels that experience into Fountain and beyond, weaving hazy downtempo textures, chuggy disco, leftfield house, and cosmic oddities as his points of navigation.
