I was struck by the passage in Genesis where it very clearly states that God said 'Let us'.... so I was researching who this 'us' was. This brought me to some research on the ancient Sumerian texts (Sumerians being the oldest living civilisation on the planet). There you are given some context as to who the 'we' was. Basically, the Sumerians write that God's (plural) came from the sky and created man in his own image so that we would become workers for them. At some point there were great wars etc. Too long to go into here, but I was struck by the growing school of thought about our origins. So I decided that perhaps I could write about it. Hence the track.

This song is meant to represent the loneliness you feel when you are separated from everything you want, and material things have no meaning compared to what your heart feels. I wrote this song in 1997 while I was in a hotel in Madrid for 3 months, far from everything I loved.

four walls and a bed
a telephone, my pajamas
a small table, a stool
a mirror, a wardrobe
a comb and a calendar

A loud alarm clock
a window, a distant sky
some hangers, a folder
my toothbrush
shirts, boots, trousers
advertising in the drawers

My diary next to a mobile phone
the TV, the keys and a bathroom
those minutes that hurt
a laptop
a lighter and my cigarette
and that silence so dull

The hustle and bustle and the people
a thousand meaningless faces
my fake character
and my house so absent
the trips, the coming and going
the metro and that heavy train
