A new disco hero for a new disco age: Sarcastalites brings us eight 
original, '70s-style disco songs on the debut album
"Spaces for Strangers," released by

THE HERO SHE NEEDED AS A KID

More than 15 years into a recording career that’s included collaborations with Fleet Foxes, members of Steely Dan, The B-52s, and Pedro the Lion, Gwen "G.T." Thomas is revealing her hidden DISCO super-powers. On the debut Sarcastalites album, it's clear she's right at home in the genre, so the question is: what took her so long to start writing and producing disco, herself?

    “That’s what can happen when, in your formative years, you don’t see anyone you can relate to doing the thing that interests you,"
explains Thomas.

    "What would’ve helped? Even just one disco album with liner notes full of women’s names steering the ship. This project is the result of realizing what I had to do in order to become the hero I needed as a kid:
    I had to make that album!”

With this inspiration, writing and recording demos of disco songs became Thomas’ priority, between gigs as a musician-for-hire (including recent film scores for Dutch artists Margit Lukács and Persijn Broersen, vocals for Benny Sings, lyrics for GOSTO, and playing in the live band and co-writing/-arranging/ performing on the latest album from orchestral pop artist Bauer).

Hoping the demos would inspire some women to come recreate the songs in the studio with her, she never stopped futzing with the recordings, until realizing they’d become fully produced disco stompers in the meanwhile, and a live-band redo would be superfluous. When Cleveland-/ Amsterdam-based cassette label Bullshit Night Records caught a preview, they agreed. A plan was hatched to release the eight-song album ASAP (including the cassette-exclusive "Junkyard Disco,” the only song of the bunch whose instrumentation consists of pots, pans, wooden spoons, metal lids, and glassware).

But if the vision was liner notes full of women’s names, then “all tracks written, arranged, performed, and produced by Gwen Thomas” simply wasn’t gonna cut it.

Since no recording is complete without mixing and mastering, Thomas seized the opportunity to recruit a team of 6 women engineers. The personalized mixing approaches of Jess Fenton, Ali “A MAC” McGuire, Jaclyn Sanchez, Vanessa Silberman, and Marián G Villota assure there’s a mix for every disco-palette across these songs. With final touches by Airshow Mastering’s Anna Frick, the album sealed its fate as a true showcase of talented women, each pouring musicality in their production and audio-working craft for bringing these brand new disco tracks into the world.

One of several overarching themes of the album "Spaces for Strangers" is the quest for originality amidst a sea of knock-offs. In the opening track, Sarcastalites calls it "The Real Thing," singing with conviction:

"A COLLECTOR KNOWS A REPLICA!"

DISCO JUICE - The "More Music Less Mindless Chatter" Program  11/11/2017

G.T. Thomas makes Eclectic music with influences of Lounge, Electronica, Jazz, and Pop.

Her work ranges stylistically across four albums to reveal her many facets as a producer, songwriter, vocalist, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist, garnering her comparisons to Goldfrapp, Kate Bush, Cibo Matto, and even “the Muppets on acid” (by music blog 3voor12).

G.T. Thomas has performed from Seattle, to NYC, Amsterdam, and beyond and collaborated with artists like Fleet Foxes, Benny Sings, The Metropole Orchestra, and members of The B-52s, Steely Dan, and The Free Design. Her own live act has ranged from a pop orchestra of 13 people, to performing as a one-woman-band (playing multiple instruments simultaneously while singing).

She also fulfills commissions to compose and perform minimalist, meditative, and sometimes danceable excursions on her semi-modular synth system, and presents workshops and guest lectures on things like composition and performance process, including past presentations for Dutch Modular Festival, Bakersfield College Panorama Creative Music Summit, Byrdcliffe Artist Residency, Frequency Shift, Popsport Nederland, and SUNY New Paltz Advanced Electronic Music Program.
