Hi, and welcome back. So what is a guarantor? The dictionary says: "A person, organisation, or thing that guarantees something". In simple terms, guaranteeing a loan means promising to make the repayments if the borrower can't. The extra protection for the lender enables them to lend to people that the banks won't, due to not having a credit history or having a poor credit score. Usually the guarantor will need to have a good credit rating and some companies require them to be a homeowner.

After looking at the basics of what it means to be a guarantor in our last video, today I'd like to discuss the benefits of guarantor loans. 

For people that can't get a bank loan, guarantor loans are often the cheapest available. The alternative is usually either a payday loan (with APRs as high as 4,000%) or a credit union that often requires you to save, before you can borrow, meaning that they aren't suitable if you need a loan quickly.

Like all loans, you should always search for the best option for you, making sure that you understand the terms of the agreement before signing.

This week we’ll look at the type of person who can act as your guarantor.

The criteria to be a guarantor will vary from lender to lender and the specific requirements often depend on the amount of money you’re trying to obtain. If you’re applying for more than £500 your guarantor will usually need to be homeowner, although the loan will not be secured against their property. Homeowners are seen as being more financially stable, which is why lenders prefer to have homeowner guarantors.

When looking for a guarantor, its important to choose someone who knows you well and trusts you to pay the loan back on time. 

Friends, family members or even your employer are usually good places to start. Remember, your guarantor needs to have a good credit rating and be able to afford the monthly repayments if you can't. This means that they should be able to comfortably afford their current outgoings, plus your monthly repayment amount.

Before asking someone to stand as your guarantor, show them the criteria so that you’re not wasting time by asking someone that will be declined.

So, what are the chances of you being accepted for a guarantor loan? This is the part of the loan application where you need to be honest with yourself. If you've followed the guidelines and match the criteria of the loan then there shouldn't be any issues. The most important thing is that you guarantor has good credit rating and can afford the loan if you can't and providing you're not bankrupt or on an IVA, most lenders should be able to help.

Sometimes your guarantor may get declined too, if this happens - don't get discouraged you can usually always apply with a new guarantor!

So, Can you repay a guarantor loan early?

The answer to this question is "yes". However, the most important thing to do is to check whether the lender will charge you for repaying the loan early. Some lenders will charge and some won't, so shop around if you think you may want to repay early.

There is often a saving involved with repaying early, because most guarantor lenders charge interest daily - so you will repay less if you borrow over a shorter period.
