Four musicians awake in a dream. They find themselves playing together a kind of music they have never heard before. The musicians are from different backgrounds and each one of them attempts to recall their own musical tradition. However their memories have become blurred, indistinct; like trying to see a forest through densely falling snow.

for emily is a set of four miniatures developed with guitarist Emily Shaw. These miniatures act as “timbral character” pieces, each with varied textures and atmospheres for the instrument. The miniatures are unified by an exploration of slight variations in timbre and tuning that occur when the same pitch is played in different places of the instrument. 

This piece exists both as a solo guitar piece and as a piece for guitar and electronics. In the electronic version, a jar amplifies filtered recordings of the guitar part. These recordings have been filtered by the jar itself, making use of the resonant frequencies as the guitarist’s accompaniment.

SOFA is very happy to extend our catalogue with the new release from composer Jan Martin Smørdal, Ensemble neoN and trumpeter Eivind Lønning. 
As a composer – and as a father of twins – Smørdal is occupied with thoughts about chaos, layers of rhythms, and the inevitability of humans as social beings. His works span from solo works to pieces for orchestra, choir, and installations. In recent years his music has been inspired by topics or phenomena like emergence, swarm behavior, and patterns found in flocks in nature. 
Smørdal on "Choosing to sing":
"This is a composition for Ensemble neoN, with the inclusion of the outstanding trumpeter Eivind Lønning. Based on scores and instructions I have created a huge catalog from which this music was (again) composed. The result is a work in 2 parts, each in 4 segments, spanning from the most intimate nothing to close-to-white-noise everything. The music explores the ever changing (s)pace found in both repetition, and in reaction. But the process of creating this music has also made me aware of the seemingly lack of order that is necessary for something to emerge as meaningful."

Jan Martin Smørdal (b. 1978) is a Norwegian composer, with a broad musical background. After touring in the mid 00's with artists like Jenny Hval, Hanne Hukkelberg, Jessica Sligter - and his own projects - composing became his main activity. In 2008/09 he was a co-founder of Ensemble neoN, a collective of performers and composers. As part of Ensemble neoN he has worked with performers and composers like Oren Ambarchi, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock, Marina Rosenfeld, Susanna Wallumrød, Jan St. Werner and Catherine Lamb. 
He has collaborated on numerous Spellemannpris awarded records (Norwegian Grammy)- as producer, arranger, and composer.
Performances recent years include such festivals as MATA (New York), Mis-En Festival (New York), Nordic Music Days (Stockholm, Reykjavik and Helsinki), ISCM Festival (Wien and Tallinn), Ultima Festival (Oslo), Klub Katarakt (Hamburg), Borealis Festival (Bergen), Only Connect/Tectonic (Oslo), Weimar Spring Festival for contemporary music, Oslo Chamber Music Festival, but also in Brasil, Argentina, Italy and Australia.

Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson is a composerwriting music with rhythmic elasticity often using animated notation as a means to communicate to musicians. He has been active with a composer collective in Iceland called S.L.Á.T.U.R. and taken part in founding its festival Sláturtíð and also been a member of the Jaðarber concert series and Fengjastrútur Ensemble.
