Gudu Records continues a busy start to 2022 with Italian due Hiver’s debut for the label - a high-definition EP that draws on classic electro and techno, following the group’s acclaimed past releases for Curle Recordings, Bokhari and Deeplabs.

A record that both marks and celebrates Hiver’s 10 years of operation, ‘Wave Sliding’ wears its influences on its sleeve: lead track ‘The Initiative’ is a “tribute to Detroit’s Hi-Tech Funk of the early 2000s”, lead by the sort of ostinato bassline and legato strings that have become Hiver’s trademark. ‘Vapour’ and ‘Entangle’ continue the EP’s retro-futurist outlook, drawing on sci-fi imagery and themes of travel, while ‘Stateless’ looks to the “easy-trance” sounds of 90s dancefloors for inspiration.

Together, the tracks mark a perfect summary of Hiver’s vision of the dancefloor - bound together by vibrant colours and a starry-eyed, utopian nature.

Gudu is excited to welcome Dukwa to the label, with a four-track EP of prime time club workouts that are as powerful as they are tender.

Based in Florence, Dukwa made his name in the mid-to-late 2010s with a series of releases on Numbers, Bosconi, Tdsr and his own Dukwa Music label, picking up top tier support from Annie Mac, Ben UFO, Seth Troxler, Pete Tong and more.

The tracks that make up Matter of Time, Dukwa’s debut for Gudu, are intertwined with his hardware-driven live show, and were developed in tandem with recent live performances. The EP’s lead track ‘Prune’ was born from “playing my Nord, trying to find some cool melodies and basses to add to my live show”, but after Dukwa came across the track’s distinctive bassline, it then formed the starting point to an entire new live set.

Likewise, ‘VoX’ stemmed from a happy studio mistake: in Dukwa’s words, “when I recorded the first loop of the bassline, I thought I played with impeccable timing - but it wasn’t!”, but the off-beat live programming turned out to be a revelation, and the track’s wonky feel became its distinctive calling card. Elsewhere, Dukwa describes ‘Jeopardize’ as “his first ‘close-techno’ track” since his 2015 collaboration with Herva (“I love it because it was unexpected and powerful in the same way”), while the EP’s closing track ‘Nuvola’ stemmed from an internal conversation about taking his music “deeper and simpler”, leading to one of Dukwa’s most melodic and emotional tracks yet.

As with all of Dukwa’s music, everything on Matter of Time feels thick and textural but most importantly human, full of natural movement and rhythm. In his words, “complexity is not always the best choice you can take in music - but it’s an art to make complex music feel simple and enjoyable.”

Gudu Records label continues a 2023 for the books with Dream Universe, a new four-track EP by Italian duo Hiver.

Based in Milan, Giuseppe Albrizio and Sergio Caio have spent the last decade honing a very special take on electro and machine funk, driven by the duo’s trademark basslines, glossy strings that drip with emotion and an overall utopian nature.

On Dream Universe, a “tribute to early ‘90s house and trance”, built around trance elements, acid bass and Detroit-inspired rhythms made on iconic synthesizers like the Alpha Juno, Juno 106 and the Roland 303, 909 and D-550, they pack more energy and emotion into their music than ever before, from the high-emotional vocal that defines the EP’s title track, to the raw bass hits that drive ‘Lodash’.

At this point, Hiver’s sound is so distinctive that you know one of their tracks the minute you hear it, but Dream Universe feels like the high water mark of their work to date; a duo in complete control of their craft.

William is one of those artists who just gets how to make tracks work at both small club and festival stage level, with an well-studied knack for oversized basslines and samples that just stick with you from the first listen. Brain De Palma returns to Peggy Gou’s Gudu label with ‘U Ya Kwini’, a blinding new dance single just in time for festival season. 

A collaboration with Victor Kwality, who sings in Changana - a dialect native to Mozambique - ‘U Ya Kwini’ has been a highlight of Peggy’s sets all year, and is the first piece of music from Brain de Palma’s forthcoming debut album on Gudu. 

We’ll reveal more on that in the near future, but as someone who’s been a part of the Gudu family since the start, we can’t think of anyone better to be behind the label’s first album. Until then, dive deep into ‘U Ya Kwini’. Summer’s officially here!

Matrefakt return to Gudu for another four-track EP of high-calibre dance floor weapons.

Based in Liverpool, Matrefakt make music for dancers - that’s just what they do. With an innate understanding of how to make bodies move, whether that’s in sweaty clubs or wide open festivals, everything about their music is centred on the holy space of the dance, and comes with a submarine-deep understanding of its intricacies and idiosyncrasies.

On their new EP ‘Keep the Change’, they kick on where last year’s ‘Dimension’ EP left off. Lead track ‘Circa 07’ pairs a wiggy baseline with an anthemic lead and rapid percussive flourishes, while the EP’s title track steps up the tempo and dives deep into the acid zone. ‘Kick It’ feels like it could’ve beamed straight in from one of Daft Punk’s classic Essential Mixes, while ‘Ready to Send’ rides us into the sunset on the EP’s most outright emotional note.

Tried and tested in Peggy’s sets this Summer, Matrefakt’s latest Gudu missive is yet more proof that there’s few acts making dance floor heat as consistently as them - with other support from Skream, Patrick Topping, Anja Schneider, DJ Boring and many more.

Spriitzz (aka Spray) and Regularfantasy capture the last rays of Summer on a new single for Gudu.
 
Based in Berlin and Montreal respectively (dance music’s top two cities on the brutal winter to creative output axis? Could be), Spray and Regularfantasy first linked up in Australia as mutual fans of each other’s music, before collaborating on a remix of Regularfantasy’s ‘So Sweet’ last year. After bonding over their love of 2000s dance-pop, this naturally transitioned to writing some original material – and here we are. 
 
Co-written with Regularfantasy’s bestie Kristian North and inspired by the idea of a Mediterranean summer love affair, ‘Honesty, Honestly’ was honed over two years of sessions. In their words, you can expect “perky pianos, high energy basslines and lovesick lyrics, fulfilling our dying wish to dovetail songwriting (“real music”) and dance-music (“canned music”). We’ve put a lot of time and love into this genre-melting banger.” 
 
We try not to fall too hard into cliche when describing music like this, but come on: it’s nostalgic, it’s romantic, and it sounds like it was shot with lens flare permanently on the screen. It just sounds like a Summer fling, and we fell for it from the first demo.
