"Teddy" was originally planned as a purely instrumental piece, aiming to capture a classic New Orleans blues vibe before eventually evolving into something more indie. We recorded the song in the middle of summer in an extremely hot Popschutz studio, and only afterwards did the idea emerge that lyrics and vocals might actually fit well. So, we picked up on the America theme and travelling in terms of guilty pleasures and started writing text elements together in the studio—by the next morning, the song was finished. Eventually, "Honolulu" became a fictive scene for a "trippy dream" full of contradictions."

"Diane" was originally intended as the title track of our fifth album and refers to the New York photographer Diane Arbus, who passed away in 1971. In 2024, we rediscovered her work through photo books and an exhibition in southern France. Her often unconventional portraits of people in 1960s New York felt like the perfect blueprint for our second America album after FOR. However, the album title eventually became YELKA … in a rose hat, inspired by a stunning drawing of one of her photos by Henrike Wissing.

Musically, we aimed to capture a kind of black-and-white moment, something that also deeply connects us to David Lynch. Diane and David form an intriguing pair in this context—both reflecting our fascination with the real, alternative America and the art of framing it."

Less than a year after their debut, Donna Regina released their second album, Almaty, in 1993—this time on the Hamburg-based label Strange Ways, which stepped in at just the right moment after Our Choice/Rough Trade had dropped out. The album features nine original songs as well as a cover of the classic La Madrague, originally sung by Brigitte Bardot. With the twelve-and-a-half-minute title track Almaty, the band presented their longest piece to date. In their now eight-track studio, Donna Regina experimented with new sounds, including a Hawaiian guitar, which can be heard right in the opening track, Full Silver Moon.

Now, Almaty returns—available digitally for the first time, making it accessible to a new generation of listeners.
