I wanted to create a mixed playlist of my favorite tracks from the two queens of Disco: Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor. There is a lot of rich history behind these tracks; I elaborate below, and highly encourage you to read them as you listen! Enjoy, my fellow music lovers!

About: 

The first three tracks by Gloria Gaynor I selected not only for their sonic quality, but also for their legacy. The album "Never Can Say Goodbye" was Gaynor's debut album and was released in 1975. It is considered to be the very first 'real' disco record.The title track, was also the very first single to be featured on the Hot Dance 100 chart, peaking at #1. The first three tracks of the album were mixed together so that Disco DJs already had a pre-mixed suite for the dance floor. It is the very first mixed dance record, and pre-mixing has been widely used throughout dance music since then. 

Tracks 4 through 8 were taken from Donna Summer's 1977 release, "Once Upon a Time." This album is especially legendary because Donna Summer and her team went from going into the studio having no idea what they were going to record, to having a fully completed 16 track album in 72 hours. No one on her team, including Summer herself, got any sleep over the 3 days and Summer was hospitalized for exhaustion after immediately finishing the final track, "Happily Ever After." Side B of the album, (not featured in my mix), is entirely electronically produced by Giorgio Moroder, and is considered to have initially popularized Electronic Dance music. This is my favorite album of all time, and I constantly praise the elegant mix of Summer's vocals, first-class songwriting, and progressive production. I strongly recommend any music lover to check out the full album and give it a track-to-track listen.
