A 6s faster

This was a demo I shot out for a band in Boston I was playing in.   I was interested in getting back to the gothic/tribal sound that they explored on their 1st cd, but they wanted to go more in their own direction.  This culled some ideas I had (combining cimbalon with Flamenco clapping and other percussion) and was inspired by the 1st Badawi cd.

In the future, I'd like to do more of this sort of "light epic" thing with live musicians.

This is part of the same jam that the Jam 6 solo came from.  Just here to demonstrate some of the nasty whammy type sounds the pedal was capable of.

Cleaning out an old hard drive.  This was from a Jam at a Bentmen rehearsal on 2.26.04 and only Geoff Chase (drums) Frank Coleman (Drums) Andrew Padua (Bass) and myself made it.  Geoff decided to roll tape anyways.  You never know what you're going to get.

Some moments throughout but guitar wise I dig this from about 7:37-.  



Jam 2 At The Old Bentmen Space February 2004

The vocal solo on this was 2 first takes from Teresa.  We liked them both so we just mixed them both in.

We got a review that talked about the Incredible Hulk theme at the beginning - which was unconscious.  What I was actually copping was vibe of the theme to The World at War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtB9e_Tev0Q&feature=fvwrel) which my dad used to watch on TV.  I had remembered it completely wrong!! But there are advantages to that sometimes!!!

I guess the only drag is that the tracks never captured the live energy of the band although by the 3:50 mark you start to get the idea that it might kick ass if you saw it live.  

And there are a few people who will tell you that it did.

These tracks all have a LOT of flaws but they document where I was at the time, and in some ways I'm as proud of them as anything else I've done.

The Committee of Public Safety was my avante-garde core band at Berklee.  It started as a cafe show and then I just kept writing material.  It was French Revolution themed band with a musical mix of Bad Brains riffing, 20th century writing techniques, a guitar-bass-drums-cello-and the incredible anti-vocals of Teresa Sienkiewicz.

People who know me from then will tell you it was the best thing I've ever done.  Writing-wise that may be true (and I was certainly blessed to play with such incredible players) but I'd like to think I've gotten a few other things under my fingers between now and then.

We had some label interest and some reviews but imploded before we could get any traction.

I might upload more files later.  There are a few tracks from a radio show that was the last thing we did that need to be transferred as that show was the only time the tunes were recorded, (like "Thinner", "Zero Hour", "Danton" and "Trial") but I'll Have enough up here to at least whet the appetite of those who are seeking this out.

10 Thermidor

Like "10 Thermidor" this is all Teresa.  I wanted to have something leading into "10 Thermidor" and this is what she thew out there.  We just cut a bit from the end and used it on the "Thermidor" intro - but this track was on the original demo.

Guillotine (Full version)

People always liked his tune live.  Probably for the quasi-metalish ness of it.  Pat Aldous is playing drums on this.  We recorded this in Albany with Pat Raymaker doing vocals for some of the tracks (later replaced by Teresa on "Schism", + "PC") Pat's still on "1794" and "Le Terror"

You can hear some Shakuhatchi inspired pentatonics and harmonic minor/phrygian music masquerading as middle eastern influences in the intro.   We usually either ended with this or with a heart of darkness meets Pixies reworking of  "mechanical man".

(The) Sands are Shifting

1st track on the recording.  I took a bunch of west African Drum patterns and used them for the chorus/intro.  Then it's just a lot of shifting meters and a metric modulation at the end.

I like the guitar melody harmonized in 2nds a lot.

Schism

This was tracked at the end of the life of the Committee.  I was desperately trying to get it off the ground and it just wouldn't go.  Sometime you have to let go.

Matt Howe is playing drums on this.  I originally tracked the bass, but then Mike Mallory was available and he came in to overdub it so that's who you hear on the recording.

This was really a curveball in the live set.  I guess just like the tune.  I wanted to set up a cheesy faux jazz beginning and then go into something just "anti-" as in "anti-what?  what have you got?" 

This makes me laugh now - but it was really the best I could do at the time.

It didn't really fit with the rest of the material, but we threw it out live as the crowds seemed to dig it.

2 of the figures in the tune are based on a (wrong) recollection I had of some music from the original Batman TV show. I guess between this and 10 Thermidor faulty memory beats outright plagarism!

I should mention that all of these were saved from a DAT tape the got eaten in the machine when I transferred them to my hard drive.  Sherry Baker @ Berklee saved my ass with that transfer and if it wasn't for her - these never would have seen the light of day.

Pretty Fugazi-influenced.  I like the pre-chorus a lot for this.  Parts of this would have been a great candidate for auto tune!  But I love the verse vocals so it is what it is (a common theme here).
