This is transitional music. Music for the moment between breathes. Sounds for the close that heralds dusk and the opening that heralds dawn.

If Gunshae's first album “Travelling Without Memory” was tied to the earth and their second album “Out Of Darkness, light” all moon music, this is something different. A soundtrack for those in-between days.

The first new Gunshae music since their contribution to the 2013 Panambient Angeles compilation, this is the way of the Gun in a different style. First performed at 2014's Pan Ambient PDX show in Portland, Lady Eve took the helm at the mixing desk for the first time since “Travelling Without Memory” opuses 'Southern Wind' and 'Aya No Uta.' The result is something different, refined, stately and with pronounced weight. Procession music for ceremonies yet held.

Kuma's electronics are more alien than ever. A radical alteration of the traditional Gunshae production process has meant that they’ve abandoned improv from the get go. Instead, loops have been built from the ground up, structures in sound created and the studio embraced.

In turn, Lady Eve has created her own orchestra. Multi-tracking oboe and English horn to create something akin to Philip Glass' early symphonies. The classically trained half of Gunshae stands out as she weaves melody lines and crescendos through the heart of Kuma's electronics to create paintings for the ears that are distinctly Gunshae. Pan Ambient Dim Sum is the second release in the TKG Music series of compilations showcasing our live events.  In 2011, we returned to Vancouver to ask the participants the simple question, what would Wong Kar Wai do?

Gunshae is joined here as a quartet by clarinetist, Shawn Earle and bassist/vocalist, Pari Kishi. “Tony, Maggie and Faye” is the soundtrack to what Wong Kar Wai dreams about at night, a drifting woodwind fantasia pinned down by a nagging bass riff, opiated vocals and an enveloping drone.

Gunshae (pronounced Gun-shai) is the Panambient project of Canadian dubstep pioneer, Kuma, and renowned oboist and DJ, Lady Eve.

Bridging a gap between two very distinct contemporary practices, Gunshae is what happens when a classically trained musician and a veteran DJ and producer with a thing for improvising jam on the sound of stuff and things.

Gunshae is live ambience at its most beguiling, an exploration of the grey area between electronic and classical musics.

It’s molten woodwinds and Satie in dub. It’s heavy drones and show tunes played by a band sitting on a veranda with Wong Kar-Wai. It’s discrete music for the wifi generation.

Tossing aside classical musics obsession with adherence to the written score and live electronic performances stereotype of one guy behind a laptop checking his email, both members of Gunshae have been known to start the show on stage and finish up in the audience. Gunshae are not your average sound art duo or ambient performance act.

Breaking down barriers between audience and performer, Gunshae is as happy in the chill out room as it is the art gallery or concert hall. Each performance is completely unique, site/audience specific and completely devoted to embracing the moment.
These are Cascadian lullaby makers, crafting soundtrack made for trans-continental smudged sunsets.
