back again with my end of year mixtape & essay for my mubi notebook magazine column, this mix is very much more like a personal one rather than an end of year in films round up. for someone who in part works around the release of new films, I don't actually end up getting to see it all and Im not always so up to date and I hate the idea of some sort of contrite 2024 round up mix. when making my cinema sound work I always try and bend the material in front of me to find alternative possibilities of narrative or (re)context or to reintroduce it to the world, it has to be a devotion to something that incredibly excites me. I found that making this mix (deep in the night at a friends in a chaotic time) there were so many personal favourites (suicide, dean blunt, silver apples, throbbing gristle, etc) moods and textures that I’m drawn to, that the 70 odd minutes was more akin to putting together an end of year catharsis work than studying the music and sounds within the last years cinema. and the film list was not a best watch, some I only found through the sounds making this (although some do slap hard and I watched b4hand) but sonics I picked up on and felt helped make the collage through their sonic worlds. kevin costner still got it

Do you feel like you’re running out of time? Which way is it going? Are you able to stop time? If so, how? Many objects in the Rubin’s collection of Himalayan art reflect the Buddhist concept of time, including the interconnected nature of the past and future. About Time aims to reframe our perspective on time and its impact on our lives. 

Performance artist, electronic music pioneer, and filmmaker Laurie Anderson invited a group of her favorite writers, thinkers, and poets to tackle the big questions about time. In this episode, Laurie has a freewheeling conversation with poet Jane Hirschfield, who is known as one of American poetry’s central spokespersons for the biosphere. Her poems display that exquisite ability to observe the monumentality of existence in the smallest facets of nature and our nature. This conversation took place on stage at the Rubin in 2024.

Bonaventure, real name Soraya Lutangu, follows up her 'Complexion' single released on NON Worldwide last year with her EP, 'FREE LUTANGU,' out on PTP in May. Described by Lutangu as having been born out of "a violent clash of sorrow and love," this EP explores themes of institutional racism and oppression - something she's experienced first hand growing up in Lausanne, Switzerland, of mixed African and European heritage. Listeners are confronted head-on by these issues with the pummeling opener, "Supremacy," acting as an ominous movie trailer narrated by samples of Sister Souljah's speech from Bill Moyer's PBS series 'Listening To America,' and in titles such as "Mulatre" and Diaspora." Closing track "Fearlings" also sees Bonaventure collaborate with artist and writer Hannah Black - who contributes on vocals - offering a first glimpse into their ANXIETINA project, a performance piece realized in music, words and textiles by Lutangu, Black and designer Ebba Fransen-Waldhor.

'FREE LUTANGU' will be released digitally on PTP in May, with the vinyl edition set for a summer release together with a remix package featuring Endgame, Ziúr, Prison Religion, Y1640, Jackie, and PTP label head Geng.
