From ambient soundscapes, down-tempo vocal tracks and slo-mo house, through to deliciously deep experiments, firing tech-house and acid grooves, “It Is What It Is”, the supremely exciting double-disc debut artist album from Stelios Vassiloudis, was released on Bedrock at the tail end of 2011. Then, at the height of summer 2012, came the first of a planned series of album remix packages featuring interpretations from some of the most exciting producers from around the world, fittingly titled “It Was What It Was”. Now, at the start of 2014, comes the next highly anticipated, super-exciting selection of remixes.

The original album is rich with the many vocal talents it hosts, one of the most glorious contributions coming from Astrid Suryanto on “Feed”, giving Russ Gabriel (whose name has been synonymous with UK Techno since 1993) the perfect backdrop to create an absolutely beautiful, fresh interpretation. The brilliant One Of Them (aka New York based Niko Dalagelis) continues with the beauty theme, taking the vocal contribution of Japan’s Tomomi Ukomori on “Green Is Blue” into a deeply chilled house excursion, whilst the Japanese music master, Satoshi Tomiie, interprets things a more upbeat manner that is equally enthralling for his remix.

Guy J’s work is always touched with a magic and emotion that few rival and his remix of “I Burn Like” is yet another example of why his productions are so special. This time the distinctive original vocals of Darren Murphy are meshed into a deeply hypnotic journey. In contrast, Wiretappeur (the production partnership between Florian Kruse, Nils Nurnberg and Stelios himself) turn “I Burn Like” into a seductive slo-mo vocal house masterpiece.

Dieb Audio’s John Dalagelis (brother of the aforementioned Niko) was heavily involved in the original album project and returns here with a delightfully adventurous, jazz-influenced, widescreen techno take on “Repetition”. The superb selection of creative remixes is brought to a finale with India’s Arjun Vagale joining forces with Spain’s Ramiro Lopez to put together a frenetic percussive acid interpretation of “What's That” (odd one out here as the original track first appeared on the Bedrock 14 compilation album).

Anyone open to the emotions on display here really should check out “It Is What It Is”, the original debut artist album by Stelios Vassiloudis, as it is much more than a collection of great tracks. It’s an exceptionally exciting, bold and brave body of music that defiantly stands the test of time, beyond fickle trends and fashions, and remains a benchmark release from Bedrock to this day.

A welcome returning figure to the Meanwhile Roster, Mike Rish is no stranger to success. With numerous cross-genre hits under multiple aliases, his own name sees him reach rarefied heights in the Progressive House genre with work signed to Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music, Guy J’s Lost & Found and Praveen Achary’s Juicebox Music.

December 2021 saw a Meanwhile debut with the sublime 3-track “Beyond” EP, while April 2023 witnessed a standout reworking of Jamie Stevens’ “Storm Front”. Returning for a second outing, his latest triple tracker opens with the funky rhythmic backdrop of “GT”. Using an intricate percussive arrangement to provide a club-friendly foundation, a swathe of stereo-panned textures and synth effects meander across the opening movements, accompanied by delay-infused vocal cuts. A smooth arpeggio adds a touch of traditional progressive drive at the breakdown and beyond, while a further synth motif blossoms in the second half to sit alongside the rasping and explosive bassline.

Continuing the effects-laden narrative, “Shoreditch Funk” quickly makes its mark with a woodblock infused percussive top-line. Stereo-panned pads and saw-tooth synths pulsate in dizzying fashion while a grooved bassline adds dancefloor ‘funk’. A cascading arp makes its presence felt, pitching in freeform oscillator glory at the break, before continuing unabated in detuned fashion throughout the second half. The result is a vibrant sonic collage that bristles with verve and innovation.

The final track witnesses another meticulously conceived rhythmic arrangement throughout “Reka”, with a subtle bass sequence providing dancefloor sensibilities alongside a heavy 4/4 beat. An acetylene-torch lead mesmerises with its glissando phrasing while a glassy motif combines with gently pulsing pads that swim enticingly in smooth juxtaposition. Continuing themes redolent in previous outings, a beautifully imagined synth phrase syncopates in exquisitely cadenced rhythm alongside percussive counterparts. “Reka” then evolves into a delicately conceived melodic jewel in the latter stages.

“GT / Shoreditch Funk / Reka” continues to find Mike Rish very much at the leading edge of modern and pioneering Progressive House.

After a much-needed break, we're back with an EP from one of the most under-appreciated producers in the scene! Hailing from Spain and currently residing in Barcelona, Dactilar has released a wealth of productions that really get the dance floor going; including a remix he did for us last year.

This EP really shows off the talents of multi-faceted Spanish producer. Filled with warm, lush and balanced sounds, with sparkly melodies and deep basslines, it will surely conquer even the most discriminating listener! A remix by fellow Barcelonian Pablo Bolivar takes an interesting, head-bobbing twist, while the Russian duo Gorje Hewek & Izhevski churn out a fairy-tale like atmosphere-laden tune, showing off the magic that has earned them huge support by everyone from Luciano to Guy J, Oxia and Gorge!

Embarking on a new direction, this is the first in a series of releases that explore the subtler side of dance music. Not content with run of the mill material that seems to be all the rage these days, we seek out the rare and the magical, resulting in our sporadic release schedule. Serendeep Opens the 13th Chapter by warmly welcoming Liam Sieker with the debut release ‘Good Intentions'. Born in Melbourne, Australia, Liam is well known for his regular appearances at My Aeon, Brown Alley, Babylon Festival, Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Esoteric. He has also released music on the finest imprints such as Nick Warren's The Soundgarden and Matan Caspi and Stan Kolev's Revolt Music & Tripswitch's Onedotsixtwo many others. Not known to many Mike Rish one of the best upcoming producers, his unique style of production got him to labels such as Bunny Tiger Dubs, Colorize.

The atmospheric percussive quality supported by the growling baseline makes ‘Good Intentions' headliner of the release. A deeper yet fierce piece through a musical storyboard with an implicit sense of adventure, Mike's remix pushes the boundaries in sound-design and complex rhythms within the existing framework of the original. Ideally following deeper sounds soundscape, flowing through tasteful modulation ‘Understanding' closes the 23 Min EP.
