I was inspired to write Fjell by walking up a mountain in Wales called Cadair Idris. Each section in the song's arrangement reflects the stages of challenge the mountain presents, and the sense of reward you get from reaching certain points. 

This experience resonates closely to what inspired my new album, 'Tåke'. It was a hike in Norway that gave me inspiration to write music that captures the sense of accomplishment you get from exploring new places and taking yourself out of your comfort zone. Each track is a mini documentary of thought processes and experiences inspired by my recent adventures.

Fjell is a track that moulds two key musical influences of mine together: post-rock and techno. I wanted to see if I could find a middle ground that retained enough familiarity between both genres. Getting the two genres to fuse together sonically was the most exciting part of writing this.

My inspiration for these remixes was to play with this concept of opposite spaces, and tailor it to how I am trying to develop my work, personally. 

Spaces can completely change perception of sound. Opposites seem to inspire me: I am as fascinated with an anechoic chamber where all acoustic reflections are non-existent – as I am with a highly reverberant space, such as an auditorium or hall. 

As an artist who's known more for writing music suited for dark spaces, I find myself battling against the expectations that surround this context frequently. The Dark reinterpretation is my familiar ground; the Light is essentially a rejection of that.

Feelings Within a Dark Space

‘Dust’ borrowed its name from a short story by Greg Egan, in which a future scenario grants humans the ability to duplicate their consciousness as software, thus experiencing immortality. Inspired by this narrative, Nicolas decided to focus on the experiences of the main character, who observes himself becoming increasingly disordered in his surroundings.

Whilst writing this remix I decided to use just a select few elements of the original, but with the mindset that I'd recreate the colours of Bougaïeff's sonic palette myself. This would mean I could take the original ideas in different directions. The outcome was a battle between his textures and mine, where elements push and pull against each other, almost in conflict.
