Looped different instrumental voices (guitar and bass), with a minimal-ish "percussion/micro-sample/click" track forming the basis, recorded minutes before the rest of the session.

The unbridled flow was helped along by Pladask Elektris's Fabrikat and my trusty CBA Mood, as well as the Polymoon. These creative pedal designers/builders have enabled me to work in a completely new way. Thanks chaps!

The Sustain Series project continues with its second volume, 24 recycled forms created from old and unused material. Since the release of Volume 1 in November last year, more artists have come together to salvage, repurpose, restore and deconstruct each other’s pieces, or collaborate on a particular idea. What results is a growing variety of approaches and outputs, from minor embellishments to full disfigurement.

Volume 2 moves thematically, as if in four chapters, from the expressive openers, through enchanting natural-sounding pieces, before opening up to more ethereal expanses, and finally darker and more thoughtful ones. As it does, visions emerge of our natural world - its power, its beauty and its vulnerability.

‘HS2 Ghostlands’ is a multi-disciplinary arts project created in response to the climate emergency and HS2, highlighting issues of deforestation, habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. This project is the result of working on location at 18 specific sites over a 5-month period collecting field recordings and conducting extensive research into HS2 and its environmental impact (the permanent destruction of 108 ancient woodlands and wildlife habitats). The final outcome of the project includes a digital archive of recordings in the form of an interactive sound map, a set of musical instruments hand-built by recycling natural materials found at the locations and a newly composed piece of experimental music titled 'Ghostlands'. 

'Ghostlands' combines all the environmental audio recordings of the locations with original musical compositions created in response to the spaces using found natural materials as instruments as well as original vocal, multi-instrumental and electronic compositions inspired by reading the shapes, colours, textures and structures found in the visual landscape of the woodland as a musical score. Some melodic elements are also inspired by echoing patterns in birdsong heard at the locations and some phrases are directly translated from the birdsong itself by converting the audio data of recordings into midi data which was then assigned the voice of an acoustic piano. The final musical piece uses a mix of traditional acoustic instruments, electronic instruments, vocals, a variety of hardware devices and my own hand-built instruments. By creating instruments from fragments of the landscape such as fallen branches, the musical compositions are not only framed by the sounds of the woodland in the field recordings but are also made from the sites themselves, literally resonating through the dead wood of these locations.

'Ray' is Ashley Paul's bright, sensual return to Slip: a lifting, delighting suite of yearning winds, loose beats, and cocooning, humid bass coming together and falling apart as songs. 

The LP airs Paul's new trio, alongside bass clarinettist Yoni Silver and bassist Otto Willberg, who fatten out and shine light on her singularly intimate, multi-instrumental with mystery and grace. 2018's 'Lost In Shadows' wrote into the bewildering ecstasy of recent motherhood with a tingling resolve. On 'Ray' - recorded remotely during lockdown - Paul's deliciously hesitant songcraft is an outpouring and an anchor in freshly tumultuous times. 

Says Ashley:

"Over the past six months I’ve found myself needing music in a new way, a way of coping. I found again albums I had loved in the past, full of melody and humour, to cancel out the barrage of terrible news happening outside. I think this album is a reflection of that need. There is the playfulness of spending my days with our four year old, and the hours spent tending to plants in the garden and examining bugs, and also the pain of missing family and friends. It’s hard for me to fully comprehend the breadth of emotion I've felt recently but maybe this is a small window.
The trio idea had been formulating in my head for months, and then lockdown happened. At first I was very disappointed and thought I'd be waiting forever to finally make it a reality, but time passed. I started working on a new album and could only hear it with these guys. We recorded remotely. I sent material in a variety of ways; written, aurally and verbal ideas/queues, sometimes with just a shell of a track and other times nearly completed. I wanted all our voices to be present, and to allow freedom in the parts for interpretation and improvisation. Maybe because we’ve all worked together in various situations and are friends, I’m not sure, but it came together naturally, magically and quickly."
