Leave The Light On

The Lobster white label series finally gets back into gear with a sublime five-track scorcher from core London member Luke Palmer aka Ozel AB. 

After firing some deafening shots with last year's Crimes EP - which burrowed deep into some seriously trippy and journey'd house, techno and acid -Valis sees Palmer develop those evolving arrangement ideas across five very different soundboards that bring his signature brain-fuzzed deepness, rubbery acid and dubbed-out sound design to the fore. 

Allejo is the morphing club slayer, built on a stack of crystalline synths that slowly breakaway into a gutter full of tumbling basslines and shuttered chord stabs. Proper heat that's been battered by the LT fam since early last year. 

Down The Cut is a deep and mysterious cut, channeling Palmer's knack for paranoid atmospheres and suspended tension into a cloak 'n' dagger style spy pursuit. All moving shadows and shifting figures under late night lamp light. 

Built around a bubbling and squelching synth loop, Glow is the central ambient skit providing a pivot point and gateway to the flip-side of the EP, where live favourite and full extended jam Stoosh 95 opens proceedings. Almost a forgotten 90's classic - if it wasn't pitched down to a dragging, groove-soaked tempo - this is Ozel AB in his most dangerous state. Forever building layers of grooves and percussive teasing, punctuated by small spoken word whispers and ending in utter euphoric bliss from the lush, sun-gleaned synths to the chopped vocal wails. File under big time room-crusher. 

Then rounding out the proceedings is the prickly Needler. Broken air con-esque blasts of foggy noise crash over a camel-humped bass-line and more late night contemplative pad work, which does a full about turn into a final minute of hazy London garage. Another little surprise to keep the toes tickled 'til next time.

Her name is Or:la and she arrives at her debut 12” already boasting a formidable reputation as a DJ and promoter in the UK - her long-standing Meine Nacht party is Merseyside’s finest and her appearances on WHP line-ups are turning heads. The 12” in question is ‘UK Lonely’ - a four track EP that flaunts enviable range and seems to contradict the producer’s youthful years. In it she covers a broad spectrum of past and contemporary influences spanning garage, Afrobeat, breaks and dubstep.

The A-side is punchy yet elegant: vocal cut-ups drift through off-beat percussions in title track ’UK Lonely’, while riddims and melodies weave in and out of each other on an exotic ‘Limbosoup’. The B-side is more contemplative: ‘X & O’ recalls the wistful vocals and layers them over aughties breakbeats before ’Jaipur’ rounds off this opening salvo in delicate and playful fashion, hinting at things to come.

In the two years since his debut EP on Ultramajic, Berlin-based Chambray has dedicated himself to a sole musical purpose. Pick up any of his recent works, from his original productions to remixes for heavyweights like Amtrac and DJ Deeon, and you’ll hear cutting edge energetic aesthetics, all the ingredients for hatching an adrenalin rush and the creation of perfect dancefloor alchemy.

Chambray's debut album ‘Reliev’ is the embodiment of his positive energy that unites listeners from across scenes. His music strikes a careful balance and creates harmonic relationships between classic house heads, Chicago ghetto house shufflers and UK bass lovers.

Seamlessly woven together on ‘Reliev’ are jacking house beats, stabbing piano chords, crisp techno kicks and vocals from Chambray and his friends. Every track is laced with a common thread - a mechanically assisted funk that flows in synchronicity and grabs you by the guts. ‘Yousme' is an aerodynamic drum tool for eager feet, inaugurating a lethal set of tracks designed to free both body and mind. ‘Cerulean’, as the name suggests, colours up the cognitive pathway with more synth washes and piano stabs. Gearing up into full ghetto mode, the album peaks with ‘Qt Wit Da Bty’, a cheeky take on booty house. Chambray beckons you back to the floor with the chanting vocals of ‘Want it Back’.  ‘Acres’ sets the landscape for the album with rising synths, chord stabs and a pumping twisted tech funk groove.  Finally, ‘Treat Yo Self’ provides a refreshing mint with its aqueous synth notes flowing through the broken drum structure.

So this is a cover of "This Charming Man" by The Smiths done in the style of Super Mario Bros.. I'm planning on doing a video as soon as I can figure out how to work with Flash. The sound effects are only there to help the listener visualize the "game". I'm looking to do other 80s songs in this style as well (with accompanying videos). Enjoy!

So this one is a version of "Come on Eileen" done in the style of Pac Man (with another game thrown in. try to guess which one :))

1982 was a very good year for me. I was 10, thoroughly addicted to videogames & I fell in love for the first time with a girl I met at summer camp. This song (and game) was the soundtrack to that summer. I still think of her every time I hear it :). Hope you enjoy this one! More to come!
