BLACK GIRL / WHITE GIRL is a powerhouse duo on the rise. Over the past decade, they've established an iconic sound oscillating between high-energy techno, rave hypnotism, and Chicago jack. 

The Israeli-Curacaoan couple has been on an unstoppable tear lately, releasing a flurry of highly sought-after tracks on Hardgroove, Symbolism, and Super Rhythm Trax. They’ve picked up support from techno titans such as Nina Kraviz, Ben Sims, Luke Slater, Ben Klock, and Marcel Dettmann, with many of their tracks getting hammered at Berghain, Boiler Room, and numerous other clubs and festivals around the globe.

On the dancefloor, their masterfully crafted mix of hard-hitting techno and vibrant rave alchemy morphs into the energetic peak-time force that has come to define the BLACK GIRL / WHITE GIRL sound. Their sets are fast-paced, muscular, and unapologetically queer, taking us to the golden era of techno all while thrusting us firmly into the future, showcasing their appreciation for the past while creating something entirely unique and exciting.

They’ve made their mark turning out incredible sets for Ben Sims’ MACHINE, Sisyphos, Watergate, Amsterdam Dance Event, The Block, Dockyard, WORM, Ozen Club, Milkshake, and many more.

Recently BLACK GIRL / WHITE GIRL has been making major waves with their ‘Multiverse’ 12" on Warehouse Music, and with a slew of hotly-anticipated releases and the launch of their label HYBRID SPASM on the horizon, 2023 is already shaping up to be a landmark year for the duo.

John is an old and dear friend of ours here at Lights Down Low. He has been attending our parties since pretty much our inception and we actually had him perform live for our 4th anniversary party back in 2009. Since then John has shifted away from his live performances and emerged as an amazing up and coming DJ in the La scene. We’re honored to include him in our mix series ahead of his debut dj performance at Lights Down Low for our annual Halloween Rave to the Grave event.

John Bryars passion for music started at an early age with piano and soon after started playing drums. He continued to develop his musical abilities and began playing in a band drawing inspiration from artists including Sonic Youth, Fugazi and Blonde Redhead. He bought his first pair of turn tables and began spinning and collecting records during his senior year of high school.

After moving to San Francisco to attend art school, John formed the two piece band The Tenderlions in 2007. They were well received for their unique mix of live electronic and acoustic elements. The Tenderlions released several EP’s as well as singles and remixes through various labels such as Om Records. The live electronic duo had the pleasure of sharing the stage with the likes of The Prodigy James Murphey, and Simian Mobile Disco as well as playing reputable venues like The Warfield, Mezzanine, and Shoreline Amphitheater as well as various festivals. 

John is currently based in Los Angeles and is recognized for his broad tastes and eclectic style. He has played Legendary Los Angeles parties such as A Club Called Rhonda, Lights Down Low, Midnight Lovers and Future Primitive. He has DJed alongside Solar, Lina willikens, Marie Davidson, Octa Octa, Interstellar Funk, Honey Soundsystem, Gerd Janson, Honey Dijon, Maya Jane Coles and many others. He has done radio shows for NTS, Dublab and KXLU. He has played various festivals such as Sunset Campout and is working on an EP set to release early next year.
