The Kaddish is often known as the “mourner’s prayer,” but at its heart it isn’t about death—it’s about life, remembrance, and hope. Traditionally recited in times of loss, the prayer itself contains no mention of death; instead, it praises the greatness of God and affirms the enduring presence of light even in dark moments. We also say it during the Jewish New Year season, when Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur call us to reflect on our lives, honor those who shaped us, and recommit ourselves to renewal. In that context, the Kaddish becomes a bridge between memory and possibility—lifting up gratitude as we step into a new year. My song draws on both the spirit of remembrance and the joyful, reverent language of the prayer that celebrates life even as we grieve.
