Economics class at Tomoiku High School was known for its challenging assignments, and that day was no exception. When the next pair-test task was announced, excitement spread across the twins’ faces. The assignment was a massive theme:
“How would you rebuild the global economy if currency no longer existed?”

In the library…

“To completely change the structure of the economy, we’d first need to unify the standards of exchange worldwide and simplify how value is traded.”

“Then how about digitizing the exchange of value? We could create a system where any good or service is assigned value in the form of ‘energy,’ like a type of digital currency.”

Kanon and Haruto continued expanding their idea. Their new system, called “Energy Currency,” would measure the value of goods and services in units of “energy”—time, effort, knowledge, or contributions to the environment. This system was revolutionary because it allowed value to be measured directly, without relying on exchange rates between national currencies.

“With Energy Currency, differences in exchange rates or wealth between countries would disappear. Everyone in the world could generate energy through their time and effort, and use that energy to obtain what they need.”

Haruto wrote “Energy = Value” on the whiteboard and continued explaining.
“And this system would be connected through a global digital network, allowing individual energy units to be traded instantly. If we incorporate algorithms that evaluate environmental impact and social contribution, we could build a sustainable society.”

Then came the time for their presentation.

“We propose eliminating traditional currency and introducing ‘Energy Currency’ instead. With this system, the entire world can measure the value of goods and services using a shared standard.
Energy Currency measures abstract values—time, effort, knowledge, contribution—in place of money. People can use the energy they generate to exchange for goods.”

When the presentation ended, the classroom fell silent. The professors began speaking with serious expressions.

“This is a very intriguing proposal. If this Energy Currency were ever established, it could indeed transcend borders and wealth disparities, offering equal opportunities for value exchange to everyone.”

Another professor added, “However, in reality, unifying the methods of calculating value and measuring energy across the world would be extremely difficult. But if that hurdle could be overcome, eliminating currency might truly give rise to a new economic system.”

When the test was over and the twins left the classroom, they exchanged smiles.

“Well, there are still challenges, but it was worth trying.”

“Yeah. And maybe, if a system like this really came to life, the world could become more equal, and the economy might change. I think the future will move in that direction. It’d be nice if our idea could become even one small step toward that.”
