We're big fans of the Cold Tonic crew and they blew the roof off last time they joined us in the shop for an in-store session with label heads Krystal Klear and Maurice Alexander playing alongside Gerd Janson and Philip Laurer. Since their first release we've been strong supporters of their imprint and but their newest release really caught our attention since it features a brand new signing on the flip. "Nothing But A Freak" marks Sandboards musical debut and we can't get enough of it! The emotional House cut combines rattling drums and melancholic chords to comfortably sit underneath a spoken word monologue about the one thing that keeps us moving... We're very excited to see what this the New Zealand duo comes up with next! Keep an eye on these two, we have the feeling they'll be coming up quick! in the meantime, reserve a copy of of their new split release with Krystal Klear ahead of the official release at the end of the month.

Al Massrieen was one of the first bands I learned about once I discovered the tape format. They were really popular in Egypt in the 1970s and the more of their music I found on either tapes or Arabic pirate mp3 sites, the more I was becoming a fan. Only very few bands from the region can match the band’s versatility as well as their strive for innovation. Hany Shenoda is the man behind the Al Massrieen band. He is a reknown figure of the Egyptian music scene and has worked with everyone from Abdel Halim Hafez to Mohamed Mounir. Al Massrieen was his attempt to introduce his ideas of modernizing Egyptian music, heavily encouraged by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt's only winner of the Nobel Price for literature) after discussing his ideas with him.

Embodying what they coin as Manchester's disobedient nature, Ad Hoc Records are championing the sound of their local producers. Transcending labels and genres, their aim is to showcase the best the city has to offer through the international and borderless language of music. Although the imprint has only two releases to their name so far, a various artist package and a solo EP from Taurtollo, they've already shown that they're sticking true to their ethos as both records explore territories ranging from downtempo, jazzy flavours to percussion filled house grooves. Their third release is up next and it is once again highlighting the diversity of the city's producers with a second various artists package. Welcoming new members Sid Quirk, Two Tail, and RareBIT to their roster, Ad Hoc are also bringing back Yadava from their successful first release.

Yadava is the c0-founder of successful Mancunian party night So Flute which showcases forward thinking talent from across the globe and he also has a residency on NTS Radio. Likely drawing on influences from the wide variety of guests booked at their parties over the past 6 years, Yadava's sound is one that's hard to pin down. Quality over quantity is a popular saying and it holds true here, as what little we have heard from the producer has been quite ear-catching thus far and that definitely includes today's premiere of his track Heart Strings. A variety of natural sounding percussion and a funky muted bass help enforce the groove but the real beauty of this tune lies within the melodic elements. Despite being a very familiar sample, the strings in the aptly titled track can still be re-imagined if used in proper, creative ways and that is the case here. With support from a lovely bent guitar and delicate keys around the strings that oh so pull at our heart, the result as a whole is a spectacular medley of sounds even Pepe Bradock would be proud of.

Yadava is certainly one to watch and it seems so is the rest of Manchester as Ad Hoc continue to dig up talent in the northwestern English city. Keep a lookout for this release and more over at the label's Bandcamp page.

Ibrahim Al Hassan’s album will drop sometime later this year or early next year. Fully instrumental early 1980s 4 track recorder electronic music from Sudan. Ibrahim lives in Saudi Arabia these days but this 4 track recorder and tapes stayed with him. Crazy enough he had never digitalized his early works until we reached out to him so it took him a couple of weeks to go thru all of his old tapes…..

I heard about Seif Abu Bakr and The Scorpions for the first time maybe 3-4 years ago. Their album “Jazz, Jazz Jazz” ended up on my radar because of an eBay auction; it might have been the first auction for this particular album on the platform. While the bids kept on rising daily up to a staggering 1000$, if I recall correctly, I was intrigued about the snippet preview bits of the music on this album as well as by the impressive artwork. This album happens to be my first conscious connection with Sudanese music. Habibi Funk must have already existed for a year or so but I had not yet come across any recording from Sudan that I felt fitting in the context we set for our self. I remember I did some quick research in the aftermath of the auction (which I obviously did not win) to gather some information about the band but apart from some vague bits and pieces I could not find anything. In most encyclopedic overviews of the Sudanese music scene of the 1970s the band appeared as a mere footnote. How come? I really do not know. To me the music is a unique combination of incredible horn arrangements powerfully performed, a vigorous drummer contributing a funky backbone and Seif's uniting those elements. The results range from instrumental tracks awaking memories of 1970s crime thriller soundtracks to more Sudanese-rooted tracks, a lot of them modernized versions of traditional tribal rhythms and even an excursion into Soukouss. While all of our reissues so far have been compilations in the sense that we put together our favorite selection of tracks by one artist, this album will be our first 1:1 re-release, simply because the quality of the albums does not fall off on a single track. With its eclectic influences it birthed a one-of-a-kind new mixture and serves as a blueprint for what we are looking for when we release music on Habibi Funk.

Funk the Casbah! An Arab Funk Mix // Yas Meen Selectress

We're super happy to announce our 13th release by Sharhabil Ahmed, the actual King of Sudanese Jazz (he won that title in a competition in the early 1970s). Sonically it sounds very different from what Jazz is understood to sound like outside of Sudan. It’s an incredible unique mix of rock’n’roll, funk, surf, traditional sudanese music and influences from Congolese sounds. Original copies of Sharhabil recordings are often hard to find, so we’re happy they will now be widely available, including a booklet with liner notes, interviews and unseen photos from Sharhabil’s personal archive. The release is licensed from Sharhabil himself and he receives 50% of the profits of the sales.
