INDEPTH004: Arkaik [DIFFRENT MUSIC]

We're back with our latest INDEPTH mix, featuring none other than Sulley Hills grinder Peter Goebel, better known as Arkaik. Discovering Drum and Bass over a decade ago. After being consumed by producers such as Bad Company, Dillinja, and Roni Size, it was a short matter of time before he found himself playing clubs around the UK, which led him into taking up production.   

Arkaik started finding himself supporting names such as Noisia, Break, Calibre, and Icicle just to name a few. Arkaik found rolling drums and thick sub basslines were a massive inspiration, and can still be found in his production and aspect of mixing in present day. It was really the minimal sound that took his interest though, taking note of artists such as Data, Spectrasoul, and Instra:mental, which is what really pushed his current clean and stripped back sound.

Since then Arkaik has seen numerous releases on Diffrent Music, as well as winning Dispatch Recordings Octane & DLR remix competition. Since, Arkaik has seen support from the likes of Doc Scott, Ant TC1, Chris SU, Mindscape, Ulterior Motive, and Need for Mirrors giving him the open door to release his first EP (DIFF011D). His second and third release gained him musical accolade from artists such as Tony Coleman, Amoss, BTK, DBRUK, Gremlinz, and Fathom Audio, not to mention his release on Proximity recordings with Axon, damn son! 

Peter has since seen further support from the likes of Amoss, Anile, Bailey, Basha, Bazil, Blu Mar Ten, Halogenix, Hype, London Elektricity, Script & Subterra. A massive big up to Peter and the guys over at Diffrent Music, truely a massive mix!

"Bristol–Helsinki EP" is a collaboration between Bristol's Coleco and Helsinki-based Fanu. 
Both have a focus on pushing the rhythmically unique, Coleco via his halfstep and footwork influenced productions plus his Inflect label, website and club nights, and Fanu via a rich history of beatsmithery within jungle and its darker and more breakbeat-rhythm-led cousin drumfunk. 

Following on from a recent mission statement by Fanu to bring the artistry of breakbeats back to drum and bass, this EP showcases the joy of chopping and rearranging specially hunted breaks, never before seen in drum and bass, including one, for example, from a special Finnish funk 7". It features four tunes that turn away from repeating loops and focus instead on rhythms twisting and evolving uniquely from start to finish in journeys that build to ecstatic crescendos.

The 4-track EP begins on "Inward Tripper", the most meditative of the four, a half-step hallucinogenic wandering through a multitude of organic rhythmic elements and evocative melody slicings that stutter like fractal patterns in and out of attention, held down by a warm, warbling bassline. 

The EP then moves into more forceful and erratic territory.

"We Don't Do Neurofunk" makes the statement in its title but follows by example with a deliciously light and funky break, rolling and shifting in a moving landscape. The beat is accentuated and pedestaled by a doomy and boomy detuned bass that builds to an aggressive growl as the beats jerk, contort and thrust their way to climax.

Beginning with the frantic, clanging rides of the "Tighten Up" break amongst frenzied vocal wails, "Triple X" is an exercise in sampledelic dread. The drums speak directly to the body as brutal kicks and a fury of hand drums tell a dynamic tale, moving energetically through eery horror soundscapes.

Finally "Mental Traffic Light" ends the lot on a colourful sci-fi synth line, contorted on a roller coaster journey of jerking beats that has chattering off beat hi hats, clanging monster rides and jabbing snares stuttering through. It ends on a stop-start teasing that perfectly demonstrates the beauty of how the suspense, sustain and release of a well engineered rhythm triggers listeners' cerebral reward centers as well as – if not better than – any drug.

Journeying through an eclectic set of tracks from the deep jungle trek of ‘Time Traveller’ to the hypnotic warehouse wanderings of ‘Shadows’, tempting the ear with the all-alluring vocals of Deeizm. Title track, ‘Flawless’ takes a trip through a daydream state, following through with the funk fusions of ‘Past-Time Cruiser’ before dropping into ‘Harder Than Sox’ for some relentless percussive pull-ins.

Having begun producing from the mere age of fourteen, its unsurprising Electrosoul System has already had a successful string of releases on a number of well established drum & bass imprints, alongside running his own label KOS.MOS.MUSIC.

Also remembered for his prominent appearance in Hospital Record’s ‘The Future Sound of Russia’ compilation back in 2009, whilst fast-forwarding to 2015 Electrosoul System featured on Sunchase’s “Thing” – a firm favourite from the stunning ‘The Truth’ EP.

Impressing once more with this fine contribution to the Med School catalogue, ‘Flawless’ is set to excite the ears and open the eyes of Med School and KOS.MOS fans alike.
