Hi, I made this in one session. I didn't have access to any sampled breaks, so the drums are programmed in Reaper, based on a preset pattern in Air Music Technology's Boom plugin.
The pad was made from scratch in Air's Xpand2 synth, with 3 layers, a piano, a detuned soft pad and a string layer. The output was re-sampled in Amigo, using the Pong poly setting - I'm quite pleased with the result, there are some interesting overtones present thanks to the processing and reverse ('pong') playback of part of it. Full Circle Audio over on YouTube does some great tutorials on this technique.
The bass, as all good subs should, started off as an 808 kick, heavily processed including Brainworx's Subsynth.
Eric Clapton agreed to come down to the studio and re-record his vocal from After Midnight as a favour. We shot up some horse together then threw a passing kid out the window whilst being loudly and overtly racist. Just kidding, it's sampled and used without permission. I've done a reasonable job cleaning it up with just a broad-brush console EQ, using Brainworx's Focusrite console emulator. I think all channels were run through this console, along with UA's Studer A-800 tape plug-in. I could have done a more surgical job on the sample but was happy to move at pace and don't mind the crunchy, home-made, effect. I only had access to a limited number of tracks to sample from, and that just popped into my head as I was browsing - the phrase's original key fitted the tune exactly, and there's a tiny amount of timestretching to fit the tempo.
The arpeggiated sequence was programmed using the internal Arp feature on Softube's Model 82 synth, a Roland SH-101 emulator. The VF cutoff and resonance were automated. I love Model 82, it makes me appreciate what an absolute weapon the SH-101 was back in its day. Check out just about anything on Rising High (UK techno label) from the early 90's, especially when label head, the late Casper Pound was involved.
I mixed it top-down, initially with just D16 Frontier on the stereo bus, then introducing my current go-to stereo / mastering chain: Softube Bus Processor, for glue and saturation > Soma EQ > Black Box HS2-MS for more saturation > UA Ampex ATR-102 master tape emulator > Brainworx Masterdesk Pro for final loudness.
That's it, I think. I'm pleased to have done this in one session; it's amazing what you can achieve when you put your mind to avoid what you're supposed to be doing.

Andrew Weatherall's first official posthumous mix. The only b2b DJ Harvey ever agreed to. Six hours at Trouw. This one's special.

When mulling which direction to go in for RA's 1000th mix celebrations, many options came to mind. Some shadowy character 2-stepping around the fringe of our collective consciousness? An impossible-level IDM icon?

All tempting. But, ultimately, we are a DJ-forward publication and this is a DJ mix series. It felt truer to the history of the RA Podcast to release deep vault material from a time when the world of niche records felt different, tighter, more discrete.

The fourth-longest mix in the series' history is an unrepeatable masterclass, recorded in 2012 at a superclub that no longer exists. (2012, incidentally, is farther away from 2025 than 2012 was from 2000, and if we have to clock it, so do you.)

It's the coming together of one British icon who passed away in 2020, and another whose time on the road has scaled back considerably as of late. DJ Harvey agreed to exactly one b2b set in his life: this one, with Andrew Weatherall.

The night took place at Trouw, an Amsterdam club already considered legendary before it shuttered its doors in the opening hours of 2015, as part of an RA series anchored around rare combinations playing start-to-finish. Harvey was at the peak of an irresistible career second act, which dovetailed with a disco revival that dominated clubs for years. Weatherall, with infinite brownie points stockpiled from the '90s, remained everyone's favourite debonair psychonaut. 

What follows is a 385-minute marathon of arpeggiated chug and slow-cresting climaxes: a moment when the resting heart rate of dance floors plunged lower than any comparable point in the 21st century. 

If you've got time to spare, a fun side game is sussing out who plays what. Disco-dub covers of Echo & the Bunnymen? Smart money's on Weatherall. Exuberant EQ'ing of The Isley Brothers? Gotta be Harvey. As for the low 'n slow, lightly spangled house that was all the rage in the early 2010s (think Maxxi Soundsystem, Disco Bloodbath, Rub & Tug, C.O.M.B.I. and Full Pupp), it's anyone's guess. 127 BPM practically feels like an F1 car.

When we kicked off our RA.1000 campaign, we outlined a few full-send goals: tick off long-awaited dream guests, honour architects who shaped the world around us and deliver recordings you truly can't hear anywhere else.

DJing and the mythmaking around it has undergone a quantum leap since 2012, let alone 2006, 1996 or 1989. For those of us who were kicking around in the former, there's a creeping melancholy that our prime is fast becoming a matter of historical record. The killing moon really did come too soon. 

Where will electronic music, DJ sets or any of this be in 2044? Hard to say. Best not to overthink that one. Instead, we want to say thanks to all contributors on the series so far. This mix is a tribute to my dearly departed brother, guru, mentor & Godfather of the UK electronic dance music scene, the legend that is Colin Faver.

For the new kids on the block who don't know who Colin Faver is, he's the reason that you're dancing & enjoying the global dance music scene as we know it.

Rewind to the post punk era of the early 80s. It's 1982 & Colin Faver gives up is job as a commercial graphic artist & is working for a record shop in Walthamstow London called Small Wonder records, who signed the first Cure & Bauhaus singles. It was then when the first wave of New Wave electronic music surfaced & Colin was mixing up electronic music at the New Romantic Institution that was the Camden Palace championing music from Kraftwerk to Afrika Bambaataa to Visage. It was this music that directly inspired the likes of Juan Atkins in Detroit & Frankie Knuckles (RIP) in Chicago, who were without doubt Colin's American counterparts in the birth of House & Techno Music in the mid 80s.

Colin remained the resident at the Camden Palace into the late 80s as well as being resident at Pyramid at Heaven & Jungle at Busbys playing House & Techno as it had never been heard before in the mid 80s. After this came Colin's residency at RIP at Clink Street in 1988, Dungeons in Lea Bridge Road in 1989, Rage at Heaven in 89-90, Knowledge in the early 90s & played at just about every top club in the UK that played dance music.

Colin was a regular DJ on London's Kiss FM when it was no more than a weekend pirate radio station in the mid 80s & held down a weekly radio show once Kiss became legal for the best part of 2 decades.

Colin Faver is the reason I got started in this scene, allowing me to rap with him at the Camden Palace in 1984 & fully taking me under his wing, along with Eddie Richards in early 1986 as their resident House Music rapper, way before I was a DJ in late 87, when these two huge influences became my colleagues on the decks too. I have everything to thank them both for as they were my mentors & influences.

This tribute mix is coincidentally 3:03 long & was mixed using 100% vinyl from the 80s & early 90s, is emotional & has been uploaded unedited, warts & all, with pure love from the heart.

My condolences go out to Colin's long term partner Brenda Russell & all those who loved him. Colin Faver R.I.P.
