Sajjad Ali and Fariha Pervez return to Coke Studio with Jhoolay Lal. The Coke Studio composition spans the entire breadth and length of our soil, infusing a modern folk flavor to the song. The arrangement offers a diverse palette of flavors, textures and sounds that come together to enrich Jhoolay Lal.

Jhoolay Lal” a prayer which is as old as the river Indus itself, is commonly appropriated across the subcontinent. Traditionally a dhamaal, the song is intended to surrender oneself to the rhythm of universality. The lyrics praises the virtues of the revered Sufi saint Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar (AS) of Sehwan, celebrating the spiritual link asvaseela from him to his quintessential pir, Hazrat Ali (AS). The Coke Studio version maximizes the harmony of Fariha & Sajjad’s voices; their voices are suffused with joy, strength and fragility in equal measure.

The Coke Studio houseband adds a more modern sense of percussions to the original dholak and tabla beats whilst Tanveer Tafu’s rubab solos and Sajid’s flute provides an eloquent yearning counterpoint to the song.

Pathanay Khan (real name: Ghulam Muhammad; 1926–2000) was a great Seraiki folk singer from Pakistan.
In 1976, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, then prime minister of Pakistan, invited him to Islamabad for a private performance. When Pathanay Khan sang "Jindrri Lutti tain yaar sajan, Kadi mor maharan tay wal a watan", Bhutto broke into tears. After the programme, the prime minister asked Pathanay Khan three times if he had any desire. Each time the singer’s reply was, "Bhutto Sahib, aap ko gharib awaam ki parat ho" (Bhutto Sahib, take care of the poor). At this, Bhutto hugged Pathanay Khan and said "I will surely take care of the poor".
