Shoot 'Em Up, Biblical Style: West Bank Settlers Commission Video Games

Israeli settlers on the West Bank have discovered a new way of getting their message across: Violent shoot 'em ups based on the Six Day War and Biblical history.

Israeli settlers in the West Bank have stumbled on a new way to get their message across: computer games. An advocacy group for religious settlers called the Residents' Councils of Samaria and Binyamin recently commissioned a series of religious- and nationalistic-themed video games. The target audience for the games is Israeli youth--all four of the Residents' Councils' games are Hebrew-language only.

To an American audience, the content of the games seems strange.

In the first game, Judah Maccabee, players are cast in the role of a Maccabee who sneaks into a Greek camp to obtain the “sword of Apollonius.” Another game, Ahab in Samaria, lets players slay invading soldiers attacking the biblical Kingdom of Israel. The third game currently available, Ammunition Hill, casts the player as an Israeli soldier invading East Jerusalem in one of the bloodiest battles of the Six-Day War. A fourth game that is still being developed allows players to play a scout on a hang glider who guides the ancient Israelites to the Promised Land. Whether hang gliders actually existed in the early Biblical era is, of course, open to debate.

All four games were developed by an Israeli firm called Virtual 3D that primarily markets archaeological software. To date, Virtual 3D's best known project is a virtual reconstruction of the Second Temple.

I would like to today point out to you that it’s not a simple issue that our delegation is here today, and I hope that you can appreciate that.  As being representatives, I thank the Land of Israel loyalists for being patriotic Jews from the Land of Israel.  
I’m sure that you’re aware that our relationship to the German people is very sensitive, to say the least.  We have a mutual history together.  Our history is not a nice one.  It’s not easy for us.  I hope that it’s not easy for you.  
I will tell you the truth, that if you would have asked me only a few months ago on when I planned on visiting Germany, that even only a few months ago, my answer, very naturally, would have been that I never planned on visiting Germany, but here I am today.

I hope and believe that there’s great potential in the relationship that we are developing today with your representatives who are here, and with your other representatives, who have not made it to this event tonight, but are also interested in developing the relationship with our people in Israel. I think that there’s amazing potential. 
 When I became aware of the political platform that you represent; when I became aware of your attitude towards Israel, I became very interested, and the people who I represent in Israel are also interested, and excited, and curious and not sure about how this will proceed.
I am sure that you are aware that there was a demonstration outside today; outside of this event, because there are people here who claim that you represent rascist ideas.  If I’m not mistaken, they claim that I represent rascist ideas, and for myself I’m convinced that I do not, but I would like to tell you something from my own experience in my position in Samaria in the Shomron, regarding racism coming out of this country, and as far as I understand, it’s not coming out of this room, like some elsewhere.
I represent the Jewish communities in the Samaria.  The Samaria Regional Council, the Shomron, is the largest area region, the largest area size of a municipal region in Israel.  The area size of the Shomron Regional Council is 12% of the size of the State of Israel.  We’re in the northern side of the Samaria, the area that is also known as, is called the West Bank, is the area that Israel, as the Rabbi’s said, was liberated in 1967.  It’s the area; I’m not sure if you’re all aware, and I wouldn’t be surprised, because many people are not.   They term the West Bank.  How do you say in German, West Jordan Land?
Audience:  West Jordan.
What?  They had termed the West Bank, West Jordan Land, only came about in Israel’s War of Independence in 1948.  Before 1948, there was no map with that designation, with that 1967 border, it did not exist between 1948.  It only came about, because the Jordanian Army crossed over the Jordan River and captured that Land and occupied that Land illegally for 19 years.   That area that Jordan occupied illegally for 19 years is considered the West Bank.  
While Jordan occupied that Land, there were only two countries in the world that recognized Jordan’s possession of that area, Pakistan and Great Britain.  Germany did not recognize Jordan’s right on the West Bank, neither did any of the Arab countries.  For 19 years, while Jordan occupied the West Bank, Jordan never suggested establishing a Palestinian State in the West Bank.    
By the way, the PLO, the Palestinian Liberation Organization, who represents the Palestinian people, who have no historical history at all, but in any case, the Palestinian Liberation Organization came about, was established 3 years before Israel captured and liberated the West Bank.  This organization, the PLO, came about in order to take over Israel, all of Israel, in order to stop Israel from existing.  They have never changed their mission statement to this day, although the State of Israel has been negotiating with them for the past 17 years, and has given in, and given them Land, and given them authority.  Still to this day, the mission statement, the Palestinian National Charter, has the same objective, to bring an end to the Zionist State of Israel, that’s never changed.

Herzlich is determined to get back his animals, not simply to recoup monetarily, but as a message that the Land of Israel belongs to the Jewish people.
