Here's the First Place winner in the Friends of the Royal Hawaiian Band's 1993 Ho`okuku Mele, songwriting contest for new Hawaiian lyric songs about the overthrow of 1893.  It is called "I Ka La `Apopo" and says "sovereignty will return tomorrow."

01 I Ka la 'Apopo

Many folks like a particular version of "Protea," the first song ever written for that beautiful flower, including recorded versions or live renditions.  The Royal Hawaiian Band's version, featuring a Jack deMello/Bill Wiley arrangement, the beautiful voice of Gary Aiko and with trumpet solo by either Stanton Haugen or DeShannon Higa, is a favorite of many.  Others like Diana Aki's version, or Rhonda's, or Jack deMello's.  Here is one of the earliest recordings, a piano solo arrangement featuring the multi-talented Pierre Grill.  You'll love it.

This name song for UH-M Hawaiian Language kumu Kawehi Lucas began as a little play on words in a language class.  I expanded upon the title and dedicated this song to Kawehi, a wonderful teacher, whose skills in the classroom inspired me to better teach Hawaiian language in my classroom.

02 Ka Makana O Pauahi

This was only the second recording (1978) of a beautiful love song written by the Rev. William Maka`ehu of Nawiliwili,Kaua`i. It is on our "Chasing Rainbows" Pumehana Records LP.  The first was by Dottie Kalima.  Although we know her name, we never tell anyone for whom the song was written and once, her daughter was in our audience and thanked us for not mentioning her name.  Some things are best left unsaid.
