Rollin’ That Thunder is Schmelson’s debut single on Halcyon Tone Records; a ’70s inflected track reminiscent of the warmness of the better Wings moments, or the grooves of the blue-eyed soul movement. Despite it’s groove, the song’s lyrics indicate a haunting sense of soul-stricken bewilderment.

Rollin' That Thunder - Schmelson

I wanted do make something, anything, to dedicate to the victims of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed tens of thousands of people in the Tohoku area of Japan.  

I was safe but shaken and worried down in Tokyo, for days and weeks after, not just about the radiation but the aftershocks, which happened throughout the day and were dreadful reminders of the horror and havoc of March 11th, 2011.

This song was one of those I listened to to calm the fuck down.  Vashti Bunyan's original is so peaceful and gorgeous and that's what I needed and all the people of Japan needed, too -hope that life was still going to be good at some point.
